Tax Director Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a tax director job in Houston?
The strongest path is building deep experience in the sectors Houston actually runs on: energy, midstream, petrochemicals, and large healthcare systems. Employers in the Energy Corridor and Greenway Plaza corridor favor candidates with multinational or public-company tax experience, particularly around international structuring and ASC 740. CPA licensure is expected, and a background in Big Four or a major regional firm carries real weight with Houston hiring managers.
Which companies hire tax directors in Houston?
Houston tax director roles are posted by Alvarez & Marsal, BDO, and CBIZ and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Houston's employer mix skews toward integrated energy majors, midstream operators, large hospital networks, and regional banks, all of which maintain in-house tax departments that hire at the director level regularly.
Are there remote tax director jobs in Houston?
Yes, though tax director roles are less remote-friendly than purely analytical positions because they involve close coordination with legal, finance, and executive leadership. About 17% of tax director openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with most hybrid schedules anchored to the Galleria or Downtown offices two to three days per week. Provision and compliance review work is most commonly done remotely.
How can I get a tax director job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a Big Four or large regional accounting firm with strong Houston energy or healthcare practices, then moving in-house after four to six years. Houston's major hospital systems and mid-size energy companies regularly promote senior tax managers into director roles internally. Gaining ASC 740 exposure and leading at least one audit cycle as a manager is what most Houston employers require before they consider a candidate at director level.
Which industries hire the most tax directors in Houston?
Houston tax director roles concentrate in Accounting & Auditing, Consulting & Professional Services, and Investment & Asset Management, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Houston's position as the center of U.S. energy production, combined with its large medical center complex and growing financial services sector, creates consistent demand for senior tax leadership with industry-specific compliance and structuring expertise.
