Assistant Controller Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a assistant controller in Texas?
Most assistant controller roles in Texas require a CPA license issued by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, which oversees the Uniform CPA Examination and licensure requirements in the state. Candidates typically hold a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance with the credit hours required for Texas CPA eligibility. Starting in staff or senior accountant roles at Texas companies in energy, healthcare, or corporate finance is the most common path into assistant controller positions.
Which companies hire assistant controllers in Texas?
Employers hiring assistant controllers in Texas right now include Applied Industrial Technologies, Alliantgroup, and Atlas Copco, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large base of energy companies, regional hospital systems, and Fortune 500 corporate headquarters creates consistent demand for this role throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most assistant controller jobs?
Houston, Dallas, and Arlington have the most assistant controller openings in Texas. Houston's concentration of energy, petrochemical, and logistics companies drives the largest share of postings, while Dallas attracts corporate finance roles from financial services and retail headquarters, and Austin's growing technology and healthcare sectors have added steady demand in recent years.
Are there remote assistant controller jobs in Texas?
Yes, though they're less common than in purely analytical roles because assistant controllers regularly coordinate with on-site accounting teams, oversee month-end close workflows, and interact with auditors in person. About 8% of assistant controller openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. Financial reporting and budgeting responsibilities tend to be the parts of the role most often performed remotely when hybrid arrangements are offered.
How can I get hired as a assistant controller in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a staff accountant or accounting analyst at a Texas company and moving up through senior accountant roles before stepping into an assistant controller position. Large Texas employers in energy and healthcare, including hospital systems and integrated oil companies, run structured rotational or development programs for early-career accounting candidates. Completing the Texas CPA exam requirements while working in a staff role significantly improves candidacy, and exposure to ERP systems and financial close processes is the most valued on-the-job experience for internal promotions.
