Assistant Controller Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a assistant controller in New York?
Most assistant controllers in New York hold a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and a CPA license issued or recognized by the New York State Education Department through the Office of the Professions. Candidates typically progress through staff and senior accountant roles before moving into assistant controller positions. New York employers in financial services and healthcare frequently require the CPA, while large corporations in sectors like media and real estate may accept equivalent experience in lieu of licensure.
Which companies hire assistant controllers in New York?
Employers hiring assistant controllers in New York right now include Madison-Davis, CBRE, and Legora, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New York's concentration of financial services headquarters, hospital networks, and publicly traded companies means demand for assistant controllers with SEC reporting and consolidation experience is particularly consistent year-round.
Which New York cities have the most assistant controller jobs?
New York, Rochester, and Buffalo are the New York cities with the most assistant controller openings. New York City dominates because of its density of corporate headquarters, investment banks, and large nonprofit organizations, while Buffalo and Albany reflect demand from regional hospital systems, insurance carriers, and state government agencies that maintain substantial accounting teams outside the metro.
Are there remote assistant controller jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most senior finance roles allow. About 47% of assistant controller openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the work centers on reporting, analysis, and system management rather than on-site transactions. The portions most suited to remote work are financial close coordination, variance analysis, and ERP oversight, while audit support and staff supervision tend to require periodic on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a assistant controller in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a staff or senior accountant at a large New York employer and building toward the role from within. Hospital systems like Northwell Health and NYC Health and Hospitals run structured rotational accounting programs for new graduates, and regional public accounting firms throughout New York City and Albany regularly hire associates who later transition into industry controller-track roles. Earning or actively pursuing a CPA license through the New York State Education Department gives candidates a clear competitive edge when applying for assistant controller openings ahead of candidates without it.
Where can I find and apply to assistant controller jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to assistant controller jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to New York employers across industries and seniority levels. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly to each one.
