Tax Director Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax director in New York?
Most tax directors in New York hold a CPA license issued through the New York State Education Department, which requires passing the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting the state's education and experience requirements. A bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is the baseline, and a master's in taxation or an LLM in tax strengthens candidacy significantly. Most professionals reach the director level after years in public accounting at a Big Four or regional firm before moving into corporate roles.
How much do tax directors make in New York?
Tax directors in New York earn a median of about $102,640 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,700 for the lowest 10% to over $171,030 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax directors in New York?
Employers hiring tax directors in New York right now include Alvarez & Marsal, Fitch Ratings, and BDO, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of financial institutions, asset managers, and multinational headquarters means demand is consistently strong across both in-house corporate tax teams and large professional services firms.
Which New York cities have the most tax director jobs?
New York, Buffalo, and New York City have the most tax director openings in New York. New York City dominates by volume given its density of financial services firms, corporate headquarters, and Big Four offices, while White Plains and Melville serve as significant suburban hubs where major corporations and regional companies base their finance and tax functions.
Are there remote tax director jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many senior finance roles. About 45% of tax director openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the desk-based and advisory nature of the work. International tax planning, federal compliance review, and ASC 740 provision oversight are the functions most commonly performed remotely, while state and local tax work often requires closer coordination with local teams.
How can I get hired as a tax director in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a Big Four or large regional accounting firm in New York, such as KPMG, EY, or Grant Thornton, in a tax associate or senior associate role and building toward manager before targeting director-level positions in industry. Moving from a senior tax manager role at a mid-size New York company is another common transition. Holding an active New York CPA license and a master's in taxation gives candidates a clear edge when making that step up.
Where can I find and apply to tax director jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to tax director jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and specialization, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
