Tax Director Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax director in Pennsylvania?
The standard path starts with earning a CPA license through the Pennsylvania State Board of Accountancy, which requires passing the Uniform CPA Exam and meeting Pennsylvania's education and experience requirements. Most tax directors begin in public accounting or a corporate tax department, progressing through senior associate and manager roles over a decade or more. A master's in taxation or an LLM in tax law strengthens candidacy for director-level roles at Pennsylvania's largest employers.
How much do tax directors make in Pennsylvania?
Tax directors in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $79,000 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $50,680 for the lowest 10% to over $130,270 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax directors in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring tax directors in Pennsylvania right now include BDO, Alvarez & Marsal, and CBIZ, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pennsylvania's concentration of insurance carriers, regional banks, and large healthcare systems means demand is distributed across both Philadelphia's corporate corridor and Pittsburgh's financial services sector.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most tax director jobs?
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Bridgeville have the most tax director openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia leads because of the dense concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, large law firms, and regional insurers, while Pittsburgh's activity is driven by financial institutions, energy companies, and major health systems such as UPMC that maintain substantial in-house tax functions.
Are there remote tax director jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than most senior finance roles. Tax directors work primarily with data, filings, and internal teams, which makes the function well suited to remote and hybrid arrangements. About 50% of tax director openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with fully remote positions most common in companies that centralize their tax function away from headquarters. Strategic planning, cross-border structuring, and ASC 740 oversight tend to be the most remote-friendly responsibilities.
How can I get hired as a tax director in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a public accounting firm's tax practice, where associate and senior associate roles build the technical foundation employers expect at the director level. Large Pennsylvania-based firms and the regional offices of Big Four and national firms in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh regularly hire entry-level tax associates. Moving into a senior tax analyst or tax manager role at a Pennsylvania corporation or insurance carrier is the typical bridge before a director title becomes realistic. Holding an active Pennsylvania CPA license gives a meaningful edge at every stage of that progression.
