Accounting Clerk Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a accounting clerk in New York?
Most accounting clerk positions in New York require at minimum an associate degree in accounting or business, though many employers prefer a bachelor's degree. New York does not mandate a state license for accounting clerks, but candidates who earn the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers certification or pass the Certified Bookkeeper exam gain a competitive edge. Large New York employers, including city agencies and hospital systems, often post entry-level openings through CUNY career centers and civil service listings.
Which companies hire accounting clerks in New York?
Companies currently hiring accounting clerks in New York include Hunt-eas, Milton Cat, and United CDJR, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New York's dense concentration of financial institutions, healthcare networks, and state government agencies means demand is consistent across both private-sector and public-sector employers throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most accounting clerk jobs?
Rochester, Brooklyn, and Buffalo have the most accounting clerk openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its concentration of corporate headquarters, financial firms, and hospital systems, while Buffalo and Albany reflect strong demand from regional healthcare networks, state government offices, and manufacturing companies that maintain their own in-house accounting departments.
Are there remote accounting clerk jobs in New York?
Yes, and accounting clerk roles are more remote-friendly than many comparable positions because much of the work involves digital ledgers, cloud-based software, and electronic document processing. About 0% of accounting clerk openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with remote work most common in accounts payable processing and data entry reconciliation rather than roles that require handling physical invoices or interacting daily with on-site staff.
How can I get hired as a accounting clerk in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for accounts payable or data entry associate roles at large New York employers such as New York City agencies, CUNY's administrative offices, or regional healthcare systems like Northwell Health, which regularly post roles that do not require prior accounting experience. A completed associate degree from a CUNY or SUNY school, combined with QuickBooks or Excel certification, gives applicants without direct experience a meaningful advantage. Lateral moves from administrative assistant or billing coordinator roles are also common stepping stones into accounting clerk positions.
Where can I find and apply to accounting clerk jobs in New York?
