Assistant Controller Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a assistant controller in Illinois?
Most assistant controllers in Illinois hold a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and advance through staff and senior accounting roles before reaching the assistant controller level. While no state license is legally required to hold the title, the CPA credential issued through the Illinois Board of Examiners is the most consistently valued qualification and frequently listed as preferred by Illinois employers. Candidates who combine CPA licensure with experience in financial close, reporting, and team supervision are the most competitive.
Which companies hire assistant controllers in Illinois?
Companies currently hiring assistant controllers in Illinois include Plexus, TopStep, and Rippling, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's concentration of manufacturing headquarters, major health systems, and large retail and financial services companies creates consistent demand for assistant controllers across a range of industries.
Which Illinois cities have the most assistant controller jobs?
Chicago, Hodgkins, and Rosemont have the most assistant controller openings in Illinois. The Chicago metro drives the majority of demand given its density of corporate headquarters, financial services firms, and large health systems, while Peoria and Rockford reflect hiring tied to manufacturing and regional healthcare employers that maintain sizable accounting departments outside the Chicago area.
Are there remote assistant controller jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely analytical finance roles, since assistant controllers typically oversee month-end close, manage accounting staff, and coordinate with auditors in ways that benefit from on-site presence. About 50% of assistant controller openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026. Financial reporting and consolidation tasks are the functions most often performed remotely when employers do offer flexible arrangements.
How can I get hired as a assistant controller in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into an assistant controller role from a senior accountant or accounting manager position, typically after three to five years in financial reporting or general ledger work. Large Illinois employers such as major health systems and manufacturing companies hire entry-level and new-graduate accountants into staff roles that feed the assistant controller pipeline over time. Pursuing CPA licensure through the Illinois Board of Examiners while working in a senior accounting role is the credential that most consistently accelerates that progression.
Where can I find and apply to assistant controller jobs in Illinois?
