Tips for Your Assistant Controller Job Search
Tailor your resume to the close
Hiring managers for assistant controller roles look for ownership of the monthly close cycle. Quantify how many entities you consolidated, how many days you cut from the close, or the volume of journal entries you reviewed to make your resume stand out.
Highlight your ERP experience explicitly
Don't just list NetSuite, SAP, or Oracle as a bullet. Name the modules you worked in, the size of the company you supported, and whether you were involved in any implementation or migration. Vague ERP mentions get filtered out fast.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists assistant controller openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings that match your industry background
Assistant controller roles vary significantly by sector. A manufacturing company wants cost accounting expertise, while a SaaS firm prioritizes revenue recognition under ASC 606. Filter your search by industry and read the job description closely before applying.
Prepare a concrete close process walkthrough
Interviewers almost always ask you to walk through your month-end close. Prepare a crisp two-minute answer covering your timeline, who you coordinate with, how you handle last-minute accruals, and how you validate the trial balance before sign-off.
Negotiate using total compensation, not base alone
Assistant controller offers often include a bonus tied to close accuracy or audit outcomes. Ask your recruiter whether the bonus is discretionary or formula-based, and factor that into any counter-offer conversation before accepting or declining.
Assistant Controller Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most assistant controllers?
The companies hiring the most assistant controllers right now include Robert Half, Jobot, and Coinbase, with the largest share of openings in Texas, New York, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand tends to be highest at mid-market companies undergoing growth, acquisition activity, or a CFO transition.
How many assistant controller jobs are remote?
About 18% of assistant controller openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible senior accounting roles available. Fully remote positions are most common in companies with distributed operations or a cloud-based ERP, where close coordination can happen asynchronously across time zones.
How do you become an assistant controller?
Start by earning a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, then build three to five years in either public accounting or a corporate accounting role where you own part of the close cycle. Pursue your CPA license, which most employers require or strongly prefer. Move into a senior accountant or accounting manager role to gain close ownership, then apply to assistant controller positions once you can demonstrate full-cycle close management and financial statement preparation experience.
Can you get hired as an assistant controller with limited experience?
Breaking in with limited experience is possible if you've owned the close in a smaller company, even informally. Employers at early-stage or single-entity businesses sometimes hire candidates who managed the full accounting function without the title. Completing your CPA exam, gaining exposure to consolidations or multi-entity reporting, and stepping into an interim controller role during a vacancy are the fastest ways to close the experience gap without a traditional path.
What does the assistant controller interview process look like?
Most processes start with a phone screen from HR focused on your close experience and ERP background, followed by a technical interview with the controller or CFO. Expect to walk through your month-end close process in detail, explain how you've handled audit requests, and discuss how you manage deadlines across competing priorities. A final round often includes a conversation with the CEO or a panel, and some employers add a short technical exercise covering reconciliations or journal entry review.
Where can I find and apply to assistant controller jobs?
You can find and apply to assistant controller jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your experience and apply directly to each listing from the same place, without having to track down separate company career pages or applications.
