Tips for Your Controller Job Search
Tailor your resume to close requirements
Controller job listings almost always name specific requirements like ASC 842 lease accounting or multi-entity consolidations. Pull those exact phrases from each posting and weave them into your bullet points so your resume clears automated screening.
Lead with close cycle metrics
Hiring managers prioritize candidates who can shrink the monthly close. Quantify your close cycle improvements in days rather than percentages, and place that figure in your resume summary so it appears before a recruiter scrolls.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists controller openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match your industry and seniority and apply directly to each listing without jumping between sites.
Filter by ERP system to match faster
Employers screening for NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or Workday experience often filter candidates before the first interview. Search openings by the ERP named in the listing and prioritize the ones that match your hands-on system experience.
Prepare a technical interview case study
Many controller interviews include a scenario round covering revenue recognition under ASC 606 or intercompany elimination entries. Prepare one concrete example from your own close process that you can walk through step by step without notes.
Negotiate beyond base when you receive an offer
Controller offers often include a signing bonus tied to a stay period, a CPA or CMA exam reimbursement clause, or a performance review accelerator. Ask about each one separately rather than treating the base as the whole package.
Controller Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most controllers?
The companies hiring the most controllers right now include Jobot, Your Part-Time Controller, and Robert Half, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is especially concentrated in manufacturing, healthcare systems, and private-equity-backed businesses that need hands-on financial leadership.
How many controller jobs are remote?
About 19% of controller openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote availability highest in roles focused on financial reporting, consolidation, and systems implementation rather than plant or operational accounting, which typically require an on-site presence to manage plant-level inventory and cost cycles.
How do you become a controller?
Start by earning a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, then pursue a CPA license, which most employers treat as the baseline credential. Build experience through staff and senior accountant roles that involve close ownership, audit coordination, and financial statement preparation. Move into an accounting manager or assistant controller position where you supervise a team and own the full close cycle before targeting controller roles.
Can I get hired as a controller without much experience?
Getting hired as a controller without deep experience is difficult because most employers require candidates who have already owned a monthly close end to end. Your best path is to seek an assistant controller or accounting manager title first, volunteer to lead close process improvements, and document measurable results like reduced close days or eliminated reconciliation errors that you can reference in applications.
What does the controller interview process look like?
Controller interviews typically run three to four rounds and include a recruiter screen, a hiring manager conversation focused on your close process ownership and team leadership, and a technical round where you work through scenarios involving consolidations, revenue recognition, or variance analysis. A final panel with the CFO or executive team is common, and some employers add a writing or Excel assessment before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to controller jobs?
You can find and apply to controller jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search for roles that match your industry, seniority level, and ERP experience, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
