Tips for Your Remote Controller Job Search
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote controller openings from across the U.S. in one place, so you can find roles that match your experience level and apply directly without sorting through mixed in-office results.
Show your async close process on your resume
Remote employers want to see that you can run a full close cycle without daily check-ins. Describe how you coordinated with distributed AP, AR, and FP&A teams using written handoffs and shared close checklists rather than in-person standups.
Demonstrate fluency with cloud ERP tools
Remote controller roles almost always run on NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or QuickBooks Online. Name the specific system you own in your resume summary and in every relevant bullet, since remote hiring managers filter on ERP match before reading further.
Prepare for a remote-work competency interview
Remote controller interviews routinely include a round focused entirely on how you work independently: how you manage a hard deadline when a collaborator is unresponsive, how you document decisions, and how you keep stakeholders informed without a weekly in-person meeting.
Remote Controller Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote controller job?
Target companies that are remote-first or have distributed finance teams, since they have already built the infrastructure for a controller to work off-site. Remote employers screen hard for self-direction, clean async written communication, and fluency with cloud-based ERP and close-management tools like NetSuite or Sage Intacct. A demonstrated history of hitting close deadlines without in-person oversight gives you a real edge over candidates whose experience is entirely office-based.
Which companies hire remote controllers?
Remote controller roles are posted by Jobot, Mountain State Oral & Facial Surgery, and Hopper and others right now, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. The hiring tends to concentrate at remote-first software companies, PE-backed portfolio businesses, and professional services firms that operate across multiple time zones and need a controller who can manage the books without a central office.
Can you get a remote controller job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry-level controller roles are harder to land because you must demonstrate independent judgment from day one without a manager nearby. Early paths include remote senior accountant or assistant controller roles at smaller remote-first companies, where the gap between staff accounting and controller responsibility is narrower. A clean record of closing books on time, handling audits, or owning a consolidation independently substitutes meaningfully for a controller title on your resume.
Do you need a degree for remote controller jobs?
Usually, but remote employers weigh demonstrated results alongside credentials. Most controller postings ask for a bachelor's in accounting or finance, and a CPA strengthens your application considerably. That said, remote hiring managers focus heavily on what you have actually owned: the close cycle, the audit, the ERP migration. Candidates without a traditional four-year degree who can show that track of ownership and clean financials do get hired, particularly at smaller remote-first companies.
Which industries hire the most remote controllers?
The sectors hiring the most remote controllers are Staffing & Recruiting, Accounting & Auditing, and Hospitality & Tourism, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Those industries skew heavily toward distributed team structures, which makes hiring a controller remotely a natural fit rather than an exception.
