Tips for Your Finance And Accounting Job Search
Quantify results on your accounting resume
Finance and accounting hiring managers respond to numbers, not responsibilities. Replace phrases like 'managed accounts payable' with the volume you processed, error rates you reduced, or close cycle time you shortened. Concrete figures make your resume stand out in applicant tracking systems and in reviews.
List your certifications prominently
CPA, CMA, CFA, and EA credentials carry significant weight in finance and accounting screening. Place active certifications and in-progress ones, along with your exam status, near the top of your resume so recruiters see them before reaching your work history.
Target openings by software proficiency
Finance and accounting roles are often filtered by ERP system experience. Search for openings that match the platforms you know, whether SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or QuickBooks, and name those tools explicitly in your resume rather than listing generic 'accounting software' experience.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists finance and accounting openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for technical case interviews in FP&A
Financial planning and analysis roles frequently include a modeling or case exercise before or during the interview. Practice building a three-statement model, variance analysis, or budget reconciliation from scratch under time pressure so you're ready when an interviewer sends a take-home prompt.
Negotiate using total compensation, not just base
Finance and accounting offers often include bonus targets, equity, and professional development stipends that vary significantly by employer. When negotiating, ask for the bonus structure and historical payout rates in writing so you can compare offers on a true total-compensation basis, not salary alone.
Finance And Accounting Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most finance and accountings?
The companies hiring the most finance and accountings right now include Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Frazier & Deeter, and KPMG, with the largest share of openings in New York, California, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is particularly strong in healthcare systems, financial services firms, and large regional manufacturers.
How many finance and accounting jobs are remote?
About 34% of finance and accounting openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with availability varying widely by function. Roles in financial planning and analysis, tax compliance, and management reporting tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while staff accountant and audit positions are more commonly on-site or hybrid.
How do you become a finance and accounting?
Start with a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, which is the baseline requirement for most entry-level roles. From there, pass the CPA exam if you're targeting public accounting, audit, or senior corporate positions, as the credential signals technical credibility to employers. Build hands-on experience through internships, staff accountant roles, or bookkeeping work, and develop proficiency in at least one major accounting software platform before applying to full-time positions.
Can you get a finance and accounting job with little experience?
Yes, entry-level finance and accounting roles are accessible with limited experience if you focus on the right openings and signals. Target job titles like accounts payable coordinator, junior staff accountant, or bookkeeper, which prioritize foundational skills over years of experience. Internship stints, part-time bookkeeping work, and completing even a portion of CPA exam sections all help you compete against candidates with similar tenure.
What does the finance and accounting interview process look like?
Most finance and accounting hiring processes involve an initial recruiter phone screen, followed by a technical interview covering accounting principles, journal entries, and reconciliation logic. For mid-level and senior roles, expect a case exercise or take-home model. Final rounds typically include interviews with the controller, CFO, or department head focused on leadership scenarios, cross-functional communication, and how you've handled errors or audit findings in the past.
Where can I find and apply to finance and accounting jobs?
You can find and apply to finance and accounting jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search by location, role type, or specialty to narrow down the listings that fit your background, then apply directly to each position that matches.
