Tax Expert Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax expert in California?
Most tax expert roles in California require a CPA license issued by the California Board of Accountancy, which administers the Uniform CPA Examination and requires a bachelor's degree plus graduate-level accounting units totaling at least one hundred fifty semester hours of education. Candidates without a CPA can enter through enrolled agent status granted by the IRS, which permits unlimited tax practice before federal agencies. Many California employers also value a master's in taxation from programs at USC, Golden Gate University, or Cal State schools.
How much do tax experts make in California?
Tax experts in California earn a median of about $70,030 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $38,910 for the lowest 10% to over $104,000 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax experts in California?
Employers hiring tax experts in California right now include BDO, BDO USA, and Citrin Cooperman, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, entertainment studios, and multinational corporations creates consistent demand for tax experts with corporate, international, and multistate compliance backgrounds.
Which California cities have the most tax expert jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Jose have the most tax expert openings in California. Los Angeles leads due to its entertainment, real estate, and private wealth industries, San Francisco and San Jose reflect the Bay Area's density of technology and venture-backed companies, and Sacramento draws demand from state government contractors and regional accounting firms serving the Central Valley.
Are there remote tax expert jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 31% of tax expert openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the role translates to digital workflows. Research, compliance review, and return preparation are the functions most commonly offered remotely, while client-facing advisory and audit support roles tend to require at least some in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a tax expert in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a Big Four or regional firm through a new-graduate associate program. Deloitte, KPMG, and regional firms like Moss Adams and Armanino run structured California hiring cycles targeting accounting graduates each fall. Sitting for the CPA exam before or shortly after hire signals commitment. Adjacent roles like tax processor, bookkeeper, or staff accountant at California mid-market firms are common stepping stones, and completing the enrolled agent exam while working can open doors at firms that value federal tax authority.
Where can I find and apply to tax expert jobs in California?
You can find and apply to tax expert jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly through the listings.
