Tax Services Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax services manager in California?
The standard path is earning a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, passing the Uniform CPA Exam, and obtaining a CPA license through the California Board of Accountancy. Most employers require candidates to have held a senior associate or supervisor title in a public accounting firm or corporate tax department before moving into a manager role. A master's degree in taxation strengthens candidacy at larger firms.
How much do tax services managers make in California?
Tax services managers in California earn a median of about $97,050 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,770 for the lowest 10% to over $160,520 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax services managers in California?
Employers hiring tax services managers in California right now include KPMG, CohnReznick, and BDO, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, entertainment studios, and global financial services firms creates steady demand beyond the traditional Big Four accounting firms.
Which California cities have the most tax services manager jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego have the most tax services manager openings in California. Los Angeles and San Francisco account for the largest share, driven by their dense clusters of public accounting offices, corporate headquarters, and financial services firms, while San Jose reflects Silicon Valley's ongoing demand for tax professionals inside large technology companies.
Are there remote tax services manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 22% of tax services manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves reviewing returns, advising clients by video, and collaborating through cloud-based tax software rather than in-person presence. Corporate in-house roles tend to be more hybrid, while some public accounting positions offer fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a tax services manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is entering a Big Four or regional firm at the staff or senior associate level through a new-graduate or campus recruiting program, then building toward promotion. Large California employers such as Deloitte, Grant Thornton, and BDO run structured associate-to-manager pipelines at their Los Angeles and San Francisco offices. Candidates who pass the CPA exam before completing two years of experience stand out significantly, and a lateral move from a tax analyst or senior tax associate role in a corporate finance department is another common route in.
Where can I find and apply to tax services manager jobs in California?
