Tax Manager Jobs in San Diego: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a tax manager job in San Diego?
The most direct path is targeting San Diego's defense contractors, biotech companies, and real estate investment trusts, which consistently hire tax managers with specialized compliance and multi-entity experience. Roles concentrate in UTC, Mission Valley, and the downtown financial district. Candidates with Big Four public accounting backgrounds or experience in government contractor cost accounting stand out in this market, as do those familiar with California's specific apportionment rules.
Which companies hire tax managers in San Diego?
San Diego tax manager roles are posted by KPMG, BDO, and TALNT and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. The local market is driven by a mix of large defense and life sciences corporations, regional CPA firms, and fast-growing biotech companies that maintain in-house tax functions as they scale.
Are there remote tax manager jobs in San Diego?
Yes, though remote availability depends heavily on the employer, since tax managers often handle sensitive filings and cross-functional coordination that many companies prefer to keep in-office. About 30% of tax manager openings tied to San Diego are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting broader flexibility among tech-adjacent and professional services employers in the region. Tax research, planning, and review work tends to be the most remote-compatible portion of the role.
How can I get a tax manager job in San Diego with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a senior tax associate or tax analyst at one of San Diego's regional CPA firms or mid-size biotech companies, which frequently promote from within as they grow their in-house tax functions. Gaining exposure to California franchise tax filings, R&D tax credits common in the biotech sector, or government contract cost reporting used by local defense employers gives you an edge when making the move into a manager-level role.
Which industries hire the most tax managers in San Diego?
The sectors hiring the most tax managers in San Diego are Accounting & Auditing and Consulting & Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. San Diego's concentration of defense primes, life sciences companies, and commercial real estate portfolios creates consistent demand for tax managers who can handle complex multi-entity structures, federal contracting compliance, and California-specific filing requirements.
