Therapist Jobs in San Francisco: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a therapist job in San Francisco?
The strongest hiring in San Francisco comes from community mental health clinics, UCSF Health affiliates, Kaiser Permanente facilities, and nonprofit behavioral health organizations serving the Tenderloin, Mission District, and Bayview neighborhoods. Candidates with experience in trauma-informed care, substance use, or dual-diagnosis treatment stand out in this market. Bilingual skills in Spanish or Cantonese are a genuine edge given the city's population.
Which companies hire therapists in San Francisco?
San Francisco therapist roles are posted by HiredFirst, University of California - San Francisco, and EmpowerMe Wellness and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The local market includes a mix of large health systems, county-funded behavioral health programs, and private group practices concentrated in neighborhoods like the Castro, Noe Valley, and downtown.
Are there remote therapist jobs in San Francisco?
Yes, though remote work is more limited for therapists than for desk-based roles given the hands-on, client-facing nature of clinical work. About 19% of therapist openings tied to San Francisco are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with telehealth positions being the most common remote format in this market. Roles in case management and clinical supervision tend to offer the most scheduling flexibility.
How can I get a therapist job in San Francisco with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Francisco is through associate-level or intern roles at community mental health centers and county-funded programs, many of which are designed to accommodate pre-licensure clinicians accumulating supervised hours. Organizations serving the Tenderloin and Mission corridors regularly hire associate therapists and counseling interns. Volunteering with crisis lines or harm-reduction programs in the city also builds a local referral network that speeds up hiring.
Which industries hire the most therapists in San Francisco?
The sectors hiring the most therapists in San Francisco are Healthcare & Medical Services, Education, and Non-Profit & Social Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. San Francisco's dense concentration of hospital networks, tech-company employee assistance programs, and publicly funded behavioral health services drives consistent demand across those sectors year-round.
