Therapist Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a therapist in Iowa?
Becoming a licensed therapist in Iowa requires a master's degree in a qualifying field such as mental health counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy, followed by supervised post-degree clinical hours and a passing score on the relevant national licensing exam. The Iowa Board of Behavioral Science and the Iowa Board of Social Work oversee licensure for LMHC, LMFT, and LISW credentials. Completing a supervised internship during your graduate program is the most common first step toward accumulating the required post-degree hours.
Which companies hire therapists in Iowa?
Employers hiring therapists in Iowa right now include FOX Rehabilitation, Cornerstone Services, and White Glove Placement, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Iowa's network of community mental health centers, federally qualified health centers, and integrated health systems creates consistent openings for licensed and pre-licensed therapists across the state.
Which Iowa cities have the most therapist jobs?
Des Moines, Davenport, and Bettendorf account for the greatest concentration of therapist openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives volume as the state's largest metro with major health systems and county behavioral health programs, while Cedar Rapids and Iowa City benefit from anchor institutions including Mercy Medical Center and the University of Iowa Health Care, which sustain steady demand even in smaller surrounding communities.
Are there remote therapist jobs in Iowa?
Yes, and more than most clinical fields, since telehealth expanded access to therapy statewide. About 13% of therapist openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the profession's strong adoption of video-based sessions. Outpatient individual therapy and care coordination roles are the most likely to be offered remotely, while school-based, residential, and crisis positions almost always require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a therapist in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a supervised clinical position that counts toward your licensure hours, which large Iowa employers actively structure for pre-licensed candidates. UnityPoint Health, Broadlawns Medical Center, and Iowa's community mental health centers regularly hire therapist associates and clinical interns who complete hours under a licensed supervisor. Candidates transitioning from adjacent roles such as case manager, crisis counselor, or psychiatric technician also find it easier to move into therapy positions. Completing your supervised practicum at one of these organizations often leads directly to a post-graduation hire.
Where can I find and apply to therapist jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to therapist jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state. Search for roles that match your license level, specialty, and preferred setting, then apply directly to the positions that fit. No account creation is needed to view listings and start applying.
