Family Physician Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a family physician in Iowa?
You must earn a medical degree from an accredited institution, complete a three-year family medicine residency, and obtain a license from the Iowa Board of Medicine, which requires passing USMLE or COMLEX steps. Iowa also requires a separate controlled substance registration through the Board of Pharmacy before you can prescribe. Board certification through the American Board of Family Medicine, while not legally required, is expected by most Iowa employers.
How much do family physicians make in Iowa?
Family physicians in Iowa earn a median of about $265,200 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $116,900 for the lowest 10% to over $460,230 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire family physicians in Iowa?
Iowa family physician roles are posted by MercyOne, Avera Health, and Trinity Health and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Iowa's hiring is dominated by large integrated health systems and federally qualified health centers, many of which operate rural and community sites throughout the state.
Which Iowa cities have the most family physician jobs?
Waterloo, Ankeny, and DeWitt have the most family physician openings in Iowa. Des Moines leads because of its concentration of large health system campuses and clinic networks, while Iowa City is driven by University of Iowa Health Care, and Cedar Rapids draws significant volume from MercyOne and UnityPoint Health facilities serving the Corridor region.
Are there remote family physician jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're rare. About 4% of family physician openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting that most family medicine requires in-person patient examination. The portions most likely to be remote are telephonic follow-up visits, care coordination roles, and telemedicine panel positions that supplement an in-clinic caseload rather than replace it entirely.
How can I get hired as a family physician in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to residency-to-employment pipelines at UnityPoint Health and University of Iowa Health Care, both of which recruit new graduates into supervised outpatient roles. Federally qualified health centers across rural Iowa, including clinics in the Community Health Center network, regularly hire new-grad physicians with National Health Service Corps loan repayment as an incentive. Completing your Iowa Board of Medicine license before graduation and securing ABFM board eligibility gives your application a measurable edge over candidates still pending credentials.
Where can I find and apply to family physician jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to family physician jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current Iowa openings across health systems, community clinics, and rural critical access hospitals. Search the listings, find roles that fit your credentials and preferred location, and apply directly to each employer.
