Tips for Your Family Physician Job Search
Tailor your CV to each setting
A hospital-employed family physician role values inpatient rounding and EMR proficiency, while a private practice posting prizes panel management and continuity care. Adjust your CV header summary and bullet points to match the specific care model in each job description.
Highlight your board certification status
Clearly state whether you hold current ABFM board certification or are board-eligible and sitting your exams. Listings are often filtered by this status before a recruiter reads a single line of your CV, so front-load it near your name and credentials.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists family physician openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Quantify your patient panel size
Employers want to know your throughput. Cite your average daily patient volume, your panel size, and any quality metrics like HEDIS scores or chronic-disease management rates. Specific numbers make your application stand out against candidates who list duties without outcomes.
Research the payer mix before your interview
Know whether a practice is predominantly Medicare, Medicaid, commercial, or cash-pay before you walk in. Interviewers notice when candidates understand how payer mix affects scheduling templates, documentation burdens, and compensation structures at that specific site.
Negotiate your loan repayment options
Many family physician offers, especially at federally qualified health centers and rural health clinics, include National Health Service Corps or state loan repayment as part of the package. Ask about eligibility and award timelines during final-round discussions, not after you sign.

After residency you pass the ABFM board exam, obtain your state medical license, and register with the DEA before practicing independently.
Can you get hired as a family physician with little experience?

Federally qualified health centers and rural health clinics are especially open to new graduates because they offer structured mentorship, loan repayment incentives, and supervised caseloads that help you build panel confidence quickly. Locum tenens assignments also let you accumulate clinical hours across different settings before committing to a permanent role.
What does the family physician interview process look like?
Most family physician interviews begin with a phone or video screen with a physician recruiter or HR contact, followed by an on-site visit where you meet the medical director, touring the clinic and shadowing briefly.
