Verify your degree meets TN requirements
TN visa eligibility for Architectural Designer roles requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in architecture or a related field. A degree in interior design or fine arts alone typically won't satisfy CBP officers, so confirm your credential maps directly to the role.
Target firms with recent visa filing experience
Employers with recent visa filings for architecture roles already understand work visa sponsorship mechanics. Focusing your search on those firms shortens the negotiation over whether they'll sponsor and speeds up your offer-to-start timeline.
Request a detailed offer letter before crossing the border
Canadian citizens apply for TN status directly at a port of entry, so your offer letter is your primary document. CBP needs to see your job title, salary, duties, and the employer's attestation that the role is a specialty occupation before granting admission.
Search for sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Architectural Designer roles by employers with recent visa filings. It surfaces relevant openings at firms experienced with visa sponsorship, so you can focus on positions that match your qualifications without manually researching employer sponsorship experience.
Prepare a credential equivalency letter for Mexican degrees
Mexican licenciatura degrees are generally accepted under USMCA, but CBP officers may scrutinize five-year professional programs differently than a four-year U.S. bachelor's. A credential evaluation from a NACES-member agency clarifies equivalency and reduces the risk of a port-of-entry denial.
Align your job title with USMCA's architect category wording
The USMCA professional list uses 'Architect' as the qualifying occupation. If your offer letter says 'Architectural Designer,' your duties description must demonstrate that the role requires the same body of architectural knowledge, or CBP may question whether the title falls within the treaty category.
Architectural Designer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Architectural Designer role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, but the qualifying USMCA occupation is listed as 'Architect,' not 'Architectural Designer.' Your employer's offer letter must describe duties that require a degree-level architectural background. CBP officers look at the substance of the role, not just the title, so a strong duties description is what determines eligibility.
How does the TN visa compare to the H-1B for Architectural Designer roles?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and can be approved at a port of entry on the same day you cross the border. The H-1B visa requires a lottery selection, a USCIS petition, and months of waiting. For Architectural Designer roles that clearly meet the USMCA architect category, TN is almost always the faster and lower-risk path.
Can I switch employers after starting a TN-sponsored Architectural Designer job?
You can change employers on TN status, but your new employer must issue a fresh offer letter and you'll need to obtain a new TN approval. Canadians can do this at a port of entry. Mexicans must apply at a U.S. consulate. There is no portability provision that lets you start work before the new TN is approved.
Where can I find Architectural Designer jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for TN-eligible roles. You can filter by occupation and find employers who already understand TN sponsorship, which removes the friction of educating hiring teams about the visa from scratch during the interview process.
Do Canadian and Mexican applicants follow the same TN process for architecture roles?
No. Canadian citizens apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with their offer letter and credentials, and CBP adjudicates the TN on the spot. Mexican citizens must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate and receive a visa stamp before traveling. Processing timelines, required documents, and the approval authority differ between the two nationalities.
