TN Visa Associate Attorney Jobs
Associate Attorney roles qualify for TN visa sponsorship under the USMCA treaty, making them accessible to Canadian and Mexican lawyers without the H-1B lottery. Your law degree and bar admission are the core credentials employers verify. Canadian citizens can apply at the port of entry; Mexican citizens require a consular appointment.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Associate Attorney
Confirm your bar admission qualifies
TN status requires you to practice law in the U.S., so confirm your Canadian or Mexican law degree and any bar admission documents are translated, certified, and ready to present. Consular officers and CBP officers both scrutinize credential packages for this role.
Target law firms with prior TN history
Search employer records to identify law firms with recent visa sponsorship experience. Firms already familiar with visa sponsorship processes move faster and are less likely to insist on H-1B as the only path. For TN visas specifically, Canadian applicants can present an offer letter and support documentation directly at the U.S. port of entry, while Mexican applicants apply through a U.S. consulate—both processes are faster than H-1B petitions.
Request a support letter covering specialty occupation
Ask your prospective employer to detail in the offer letter why the Associate Attorney role requires a law degree specifically, not just any bachelor's degree. This framing directly addresses the specialty occupation requirement CBP applies at the border.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to filter Associate Attorney openings by TN visa sponsorship availability. You'll see which employers are actively filing, so you spend time on roles where sponsorship is already built into the hiring process.
Clarify Mexican applicants' consular appointment timeline
As a Mexican national, you can't self-petition at a port of entry like Canadian nationals can. Build at least four to six weeks into your start date timeline to account for consular scheduling and document review at a U.S. embassy or consulate.
Negotiate start date around TN filing completion
Canadians approved at the border can begin work immediately, but delays happen when paperwork is incomplete. Align your offer letter start date with a realistic filing window so you're not locked into a date before status is confirmed.

Find Associate Attorney JobsAssociate Attorney TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Associate Attorney role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Lawyers are explicitly listed as a qualifying occupation under the USMCA TN category. To qualify, your role must require a law degree and involve practicing law or providing legal services. General business or compliance roles that only prefer a law degree may not meet the specialty occupation threshold CBP applies.
How does TN visa sponsorship for Associate Attorneys compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian nationals, so you can apply any time of year without waiting for an April lottery slot. H-1B subjects you to a random selection process with roughly one-in-four odds. TN also processes faster, especially for Canadians who can receive approval at the port of entry the same day.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a detailed support letter on company letterhead confirming your job title, job duties, the law degree requirement, anticipated length of employment, and your compensation arrangement. The letter must establish that the role qualifies as a specialty occupation under TN criteria. CBP or the consular officer will review this document as the core of your application.
Where can I find Associate Attorney jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter Associate Attorney openings by TN visa sponsorship so you're only seeing roles where employers are already set up to file. Most general job boards don't filter by visa category, which means you end up screening dozens of postings manually before finding one that's relevant.
Can I switch law firms while on TN status as an Associate Attorney?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your current employer. You'll need your new firm to obtain a new TN approval before you start working there. Canadian nationals can do this at the port of entry with a new support letter from the new employer. Mexican nationals will need to return to a consulate. Plan for at least a two to four week gap between offer acceptance and your new start date.
