TN Visa Legal Assistant Jobs
Legal Assistant roles qualify for TN visa sponsorship under USMCA for Canadian and Mexican professionals with a relevant post-secondary credential or bachelor's degree in a legal field. Unlike H-1B, there's no lottery for Canadians, and TN status can be renewed indefinitely in two-year increments as long as you hold a qualifying offer.

Applying a commercial and contemporary mindset, you'll advocate for what’s possible, overcome challenges, and embrace different perspectives. If you also pride yourself on acting with accountability, transparency, and respect, apply to join our Government & Legal Affairs team today.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Senior Litigation Assistant to join MetLife’s in-house Legal Services Team, primarily supporting the Litigation Unit within Government and Legal Affairs. This role also supports broader Legal Services initiatives and other areas of Government and Legal Affairs. The Senior Litigation Legal Assistant brings experience from a large law firm or corporate environment supporting the full litigation lifecycle through strong organization, process management, and eDiscovery execution. This role helps ensure litigation is efficient, defensible, and well managed, contributing to risk mitigation, operational efficiency, and effective outcomes. Guided by our purpose – always with you building a more confident future – and our New Frontier strategy focused on stronger growth, attractive returns and all-weather performance, this is an exciting opportunity to support litigation matters while helping shape and improve the processes behind them. As part of a growing team, you’ll drive efficiency through process improvement, support eDiscovery & legal technology initiatives, and contribute to responsible adoption of AI-enabled tools (e.g., summarization, workflow automation, and process documentation) while applying appropriate validation, confidentiality, and human judgment.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute legal holds across matters, ensuring timely, accurate, and defensible implementation; maintain standardized workflows, tracking, and documentation.
- Support litigation and eDiscovery activities using available technology (including AI-enabled features where appropriate) in alignment with legal requirements and quality controls.
- Manage matter organization and case tracking, maintaining accurate deadlines, milestones, and key deliverables.
- Drive scalable process improvements, documentation, and best practices to support legal technology, automation, and responsible AI adoption (including validation, governance, and confidential-data handling).
- Coordinate cross-functional efforts with attorneys, IT, vendors, and business stakeholders to ensure seamless execution of litigation and eDiscovery activities.
Required Qualifications
- College degree and equivalent combination of education and relevant experience required.
- 5+ years of litigation support or paralegal experience with demonstrated exposure and understanding of the litigation lifecycle and eDiscovery processes and technology (e.g., Relativity, Onit, etc.).
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and complex litigation matters simultaneously. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly to legal, technical, and business stakeholders.
- Comfort working with technology-assisted workflows, including documenting steps, validating outputs, and following governance and confidentiality requirements when using automation or AI-enabled tools.
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally and build effective partnerships with attorneys, IT, vendors, and internal teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency with litigation support/legal technology tools (e.g., Onit, Relativity, Lexis, etc.) and Microsoft Word/Excel; comfort leveraging automation and AI-enabled features to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and proactively in a fast-paced, evolving environment, with sound judgment and appropriate escalation.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Professional experience working with generative AI tools to enhance productivity, with awareness of limitations, need for human review, and importance of confidentiality (e.g., ensure outputs are verified and do not unintentionally disclose sensitive information).
- Paralegal degree from an ABA-approved institution strongly preferred.
Location Expectation: This is a hybrid role requiring a minimum of 3 days per week in office.
The expected salary range for this position is $74,500 - $99,300. This role may also be eligible for annual short-term incentive compensation and stock-based long-term incentives. All incentives and benefits are subject to the applicable plan terms.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Legal Assistant
Match your credential to the role
TN status for Legal Assistants requires a post-secondary credential in a legal field, not just work experience. Confirm your paralegal certificate, law diploma, or relevant bachelor's degree maps directly to the job description before applying.
Target law firms with cross-border practice groups
Firms handling immigration, trade, or corporate transactions across the U.S.-Canada or U.S.-Mexico border regularly sponsor TN workers and understand the filing process. Their HR teams are less likely to reject your application over unfamiliarity with TN status.
Search TN-sponsored roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Legal Assistant openings by employers with active TN visa sponsorship history. This cuts the time spent cold-applying to firms that won't sponsor international candidates.
Prepare a TN support letter before offer stage
Draft a template employer support letter describing your Legal Assistant duties, your credential, and how the role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USMCA. Having this ready lets you guide employers who are willing but unfamiliar with the process.
Understand the Mexican TN consular route early
Mexican nationals must apply through a U.S. consulate and face a numerical cap on TN approvals. Build consular appointment lead time into your job search timeline and confirm your employer is prepared to proceed under this route.

Find Legal Assistant JobsLegal Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Legal Assistant role actually qualify for TN status?
Yes, but the job title alone isn't enough. The position must require a specialized post-secondary credential in a legal field, and your actual duties must align with professional legal support work. Roles that are primarily clerical or administrative without a legal credential requirement don't qualify. Your offer letter needs to clearly describe the substantive legal tasks involved.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Legal Assistant positions?
TN is almost always the faster and simpler path. H-1B requires a lottery entry in April, employer sponsorship months in advance, and USCIS adjudication that can take several months. TN has no lottery for Canadians, no annual cap competition, and can be approved at the border the same day you present your documents. For Mexican nationals, the TN consular route is still faster than the H-1B cycle.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer needs to provide a signed support letter on company letterhead describing your job title, duties, the USMCA basis for your TN classification, your anticipated start date, and your compensation structure. They don't need to file anything separately with USCIS before you apply. The letter accompanies your credential documents and the TN application form at the port of entry or consulate.
Where can I find Legal Assistant jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search Legal Assistant openings filtered by employers with recent visa filings and experience sponsoring work visas. This avoids the common frustration of progressing through interview rounds only to learn the employer won't support a TN application. Searching with sponsorship experience as a filter from the start saves significant time in your job search.
Can I switch employers after starting a Legal Assistant role on TN status?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to the specific employer and position approved at entry. Changing employers requires a new TN application, either at the border or through a USCIS change of status filing. You can't start work with the new employer until the new TN is approved. Planning your transition timeline with the new employer before leaving your current role avoids a gap in authorized work status.
