Translate your credentials into U.S. equivalents
Canadian law clerk certificates and Mexican licenciatura degrees in law or legal administration map directly to U.S. specialty requirements. Gather official transcripts and, if your documents are in Spanish, a certified English translation before applying.
Target law firms with established TN hiring
Mid-size and large law firms in corporate, immigration, and litigation practice areas hire legal administrative staff across the border regularly. Firms with existing TN employees in professional roles are faster to process your paperwork because HR already knows the steps.
Verify the job title matches USMCA categories
Your offer letter must describe duties tied to legal administrative functions, not general office support. A vague title like office coordinator may not satisfy CBP. Ask the employer to align the job title and duties description with recognized administrative professional categories before your border crossing.
Search for TN-ready employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter legal administrative roles by TN visa sponsorship availability. This saves time by surfacing employers already familiar with TN requirements, so you're not educating hiring managers from scratch during your job search.
Prepare a TN support letter from your employer
Your employer's support letter must state your Canadian or Mexican citizenship, the specific position, your intended start date, and a description of duties qualifying under USMCA. Canadian citizens present this at the port of entry; Mexican citizens need it for consular visa processing.
Understand Mexican citizens face additional consular steps
Unlike Canadians who obtain TN status directly at the border, Mexican nationals must schedule a consular interview and obtain a TN visa stamp before entering. Factor in consular appointment wait times when negotiating your start date with the employer.

Find Legal Administrative Assistant JobsLegal Administrative Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Legal Administrative Assistant role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the role requires specialized training or education in legal administration, not general clerical duties. CBP officers assess whether the position genuinely requires professional-level knowledge. Your employer's support letter should clearly describe duties such as drafting legal documents, managing court filings, or coordinating litigation support to establish that qualification.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for this role?
TN is far more practical for Legal Administrative Assistants. H-1B requires a lottery entry with only a roughly one-in-four selection chance, and the process takes months. TN has no cap or lottery for Canadians and allows same-day approval at the port of entry. Mexican nationals need a consular appointment, but there's still no lottery involved.
Can I switch employers after starting on a TN visa as a Legal Administrative Assistant?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to a specific employer. Before starting with a new firm, your new employer must prepare a fresh support letter confirming the TN-qualifying role. Canadians can request a new TN at the border; Mexican nationals need to apply for a new TN visa at a U.S. consulate. Don't resign before the new TN is confirmed.
Where can I find Legal Administrative Assistant jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for Legal Administrative Assistant positions where TN sponsorship is already available. Targeting employers who list TN sponsorship upfront avoids situations where you educate an HR team unfamiliar with USMCA professional categories mid-interview process.
What documents do I need to bring to the border as a Canadian applicant for this role?
You'll need a valid Canadian passport, your employer's TN support letter, proof of your qualifications such as a law clerk diploma or relevant degree transcript, and a copy of the job offer. CBP may also ask for a letter confirming the employer's business legitimacy. Originals and photocopies of all documents are recommended.
