Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in Attorney General
Target government agencies with legal hiring authority
State attorneys general offices, federal agencies, and public legal aid organizations regularly hire foreign-credentialed lawyers under TN status. Focus applications on roles explicitly requiring licensed legal counsel, not general policy or administrative positions.
Clarify sponsorship scope before accepting an offer
Attorney General roles in government settings sometimes distinguish between employment and appointment. Confirm with HR whether your position constitutes a qualifying employment relationship for TN filing purposes before signing any offer letter.
Search TN-eligible legal roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Attorney General and legal counsel positions by TN visa sponsorship history. This narrows your search to employers who already understand the USMCA lawyer category and won't require internal education during the offer stage.
Prepare a credential package that covers USMCA lawyer criteria
Assemble your law degree, bar admission certificate, and a letter from your employer describing the legal duties of the role. USCIS and CBP officers assess whether the job duties constitute the practice of law, not just legal-adjacent work.
Understand how Mexican nationals file differently than Canadians
Mexican citizens cannot obtain TN status at the border and must schedule a consular interview in Mexico. Build consulate appointment lead time into your offer negotiation, since wait times vary and your start date depends on visa issuance.
Attorney General TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Attorney General role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the position requires you to practice law as a licensed attorney. The USMCA lawyer category covers legal counsel, government legal advisory roles, and prosecutorial positions tied to a law degree and bar admission. Purely administrative or policy roles that don't require active legal practice typically don't qualify, so the offer letter's job description matters significantly.
How does TN visa sponsorship for Attorney General roles compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery or numerical cap for Canadians, which means you can obtain status at a port of entry the same day you have a qualifying offer. H-1B visa requires lottery selection, USCIS petition approval, and a wait that can span years. For licensed lawyers from Canada or Mexico, TN is a faster and more predictable path to U.S. legal employment than H-1B.
Where can I find Attorney General jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point. It filters legal roles by TN visa sponsorship eligibility, so you're targeting employers who already understand the USMCA lawyer category. Government agencies and public sector legal offices are the most common sponsors for Attorney General titles, and searching by those employer types narrows results to roles most likely to support TN status.
Do Canadian lawyers need to hold a U.S. bar license to qualify for TN status?
Not necessarily. The USMCA lawyer category accepts bar membership in a Canadian province as a qualifying credential when the role involves practicing Canadian or cross-border law. However, if the position requires advising on U.S. state law or representing clients in U.S. courts, a U.S. bar license will likely be required both by the employer and by CBP officers reviewing your TN application.
Can a Mexican Attorney General candidate apply for TN status at the U.S. border?
No. Mexican nationals must apply for TN status through a U.S. consulate in Mexico, not at a land border crossing or airport. This process requires scheduling a consular interview, submitting supporting documents, and waiting for visa issuance before traveling to begin work. Build at least four to eight weeks of lead time into your start date negotiation to account for appointment availability.
