Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Computer Science
Align your degree to the CS role
TN approval depends on your degree field matching the offered position. A computer science or software engineering degree supports most CS roles, but a business degree won't. Pull your transcripts early and confirm the field of study language matches what the job posting requires.
Target employers with established TN workflows
CS-heavy employers in SaaS, fintech, and defense contracting routinely sponsor TN workers and have internal HR processes for it. Focusing your search on companies with existing TN infrastructure reduces the risk of offer rescission after the employer discovers the filing complexity.
Search for TN-sponsored roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters CS job listings by TN visa sponsorship availability, so you can skip employers who won't engage. Search by role type and location to surface positions where the employer already understands the TN process and is ready to move forward.
Get the offer letter language right
Your employer's offer letter is the core of your TN petition. It must specify your job title, duties, degree requirement, and that the position qualifies as a specialty occupation under USMCA. Vague letters citing generic titles like 'IT professional' create port-of-entry problems for Canadians entering at the border.
Understand how Mexican TN applications differ
Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate rather than at a port of entry. The annual TN cap for Mexican applicants is 5,500 visas, so filing timing matters. Start the consular application process as soon as your offer letter is finalized to avoid allocation delays.
Prepare for specialty occupation scrutiny at renewal
USCIS reviews TN renewals more carefully than initial approvals, especially for CS roles with broad or hybrid duties. Before renewal, document how your work history maps to the original specialty occupation definition. Job duties that drifted into project management or non-technical work can trigger a denial.

Find Computer Science JobsComputer Science TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Computer Science role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, computer science professionals are explicitly listed as a qualifying TN occupation under USMCA. Covered roles include systems analysts, software engineers, database administrators, and computer engineers. The key requirement is that your degree field and job duties align. A CS or software engineering degree supporting a software development role is the cleanest fit.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Computer Science professionals?
TN is faster and more predictable for CS roles. There is no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and Canadian citizens can obtain TN status at a port of entry the same day. H-1B requires a lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate and a multi-month filing window. The trade-off is that TN does not confer dual intent, so permanent residency planning is more complex.
Where can I find Computer Science jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter CS job listings by TN sponsorship availability, which removes the back-and-forth of asking employers whether they sponsor before applying. The platform focuses on Canadian and Mexican professionals, so the roles listed are matched to USMCA-eligible occupations from the start.
Can I switch CS employers while on a TN visa?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. When you change jobs, you must obtain a new TN authorization tied to the new employer before or when you begin work. Canadian citizens can do this at a port of entry with a new offer letter. Mexican nationals need to initiate a new consular appointment, so the timeline is longer.
What happens if my CS job duties change after my TN is approved?
TN approval is tied to the specific duties and job title in your original offer letter. If your role shifts significantly, such as moving from hands-on software development into full-time product management, you may no longer qualify under the CS occupation category. Talk to your employer's HR or legal team before accepting a formal title change, and document how your core duties remain technical.
