Verify your bar admission qualifies
TN visa status for Corporate Attorneys requires a law degree and active bar admission. A Canadian LLB or JD from a recognized institution satisfies the degree requirement, but confirm your provincial bar membership is current before approaching any employer.
Target firms with cross-border transaction work
Law firms and in-house legal departments handling USMCA trade, M&A, or cross-border finance sponsor TN attorneys far more readily than general practices. Search for employers with active Canada-U.S. or Mexico-U.S. deal flow in their public profiles.
Search TN-sponsored corporate law roles on Migrate Mate
Filtering by TN-eligible employers cuts through the noise quickly. Migrate Mate surfaces Corporate Attorney roles from employers with recent visa filings, so you spend less time cold-applying to firms unfamiliar with visa sponsorship processes.
Request a support letter covering all TN criteria
Your employer's support letter must address your specific legal duties, your qualifying degree, and your bar admission in one document. Canadian applicants present this at the port of entry, so a vague or incomplete letter creates delays that cost you the job start date.
Clarify unauthorized practice rules before relocating
TN status does not authorize you to practice in every U.S. state. Confirm with your employer whether you need a state bar admission, an in-house counsel registration, or whether your role is structured around a licensed U.S. attorney supervising your work.
Negotiate TN renewals into your offer terms
TN status is granted in three-year increments with no maximum renewal limit, but each renewal requires employer action. Get written confirmation that your offer letter commits the employer to supporting future renewals before you accept and resign your current position.
Corporate Attorney TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Corporate Attorney role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Corporate Attorneys are explicitly listed as a qualifying TN occupation under USMCA. You need a law degree from an accredited institution and active bar admission in Canada or Mexico. Your job duties must involve practicing law in a legal capacity, not just providing general business advice without legal analysis.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Corporate Attorney positions?
TN has no lottery and no annual cap for Canadian citizens, so you can secure status at a port of entry the same day your offer is finalized. H-1B visa requires a March lottery, a months-long petition process, and approval before you can start. For attorneys with a qualifying USMCA credential, TN is a faster and more predictable path than H-1B.
Where can I find Corporate Attorney jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type, which means you spend significant time screening out roles that won't work for TN holders. Migrate Mate is built specifically for USMCA professionals and lets you search Corporate Attorney openings at employers with recent visa filings, saving you time and surfacing employers already experienced with sponsoring work visas.
Do Mexican nationals face different requirements than Canadians for TN attorney roles?
Yes. Mexican nationals cannot obtain TN status at the border. You must apply at a U.S. consulate in Mexico, which involves scheduling a visa interview and waiting for consular processing. The occupation and credential requirements are identical, but the procedural pathway is different, and processing timelines depend on consulate appointment availability.
Can I switch Corporate Attorney employers while on TN status?
You must obtain new TN authorization before starting with a new employer. Canadian citizens can go directly to a port of entry with updated documentation from the new employer and receive same-day status. You cannot begin work for the new firm until that authorization is granted, so timing your transition around a confirmed port-of-entry appointment is essential.
