TN Visa Corporate Counsel Jobs
Corporate Counsel roles qualify for TN visa sponsorship under the USMCA's lawyer category, which covers in-house legal positions at U.S. companies. Canadian citizens can apply at the border without a visa stamp. Mexican citizens need consular approval first. Your law degree and bar admission are the credentialing anchors for every sponsorship conversation.

Confirm your bar admission meets TN requirements
TN sponsorship for Corporate Counsel requires an LL.B., J.D., or equivalent, plus active bar admission. If you hold a Canadian law degree but aren't admitted to a U.S. bar, document your provincial bar membership carefully, CBP officers will scrutinize the credential match.
Target companies with in-house legal departments
Startups rarely have the internal HR infrastructure to sponsor TN visas for legal roles. Focus on mid-size to large companies with existing legal teams, where in-house counsel positions are budgeted and the HR process for TN documentation is already established.
Search for TN-sponsored legal roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find Corporate Counsel openings where employers are already set up to handle TN sponsorship. Filtering by visa type saves you from pursuing roles where the hiring team has no TN experience and the offer will stall at the paperwork stage.
Prepare a TN support letter that names your practice area
Your employer's TN support letter must specify the legal work you'll perform, not just your job title. Corporate Counsel covering M&A, commercial contracts, or employment law each require different framing to satisfy CBP's requirement that the role constitutes legal practice.
Understand the Mexican TN consular process before accepting an offer
Mexican citizens can't self-petition at a port of entry the way Canadians can. You'll schedule a consular interview, and processing can add weeks to your start date. Build that timeline into your offer negotiation so your employer sets a realistic onboarding date.
Clarify TN scope if your role spans legal and non-legal duties
If your Corporate Counsel role includes business development, compliance program management, or people management alongside legal work, your support letter must establish that legal practice remains the primary function. Hybrid roles draw CBP scrutiny and can result in TN denial.

Find Corporate Counsel JobsCorporate Counsel TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Corporate Counsel role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, Corporate Counsel qualifies under the TN visa's lawyer category, which covers legal positions requiring an LL.B., J.D., or equivalent degree plus bar membership. The role must primarily involve the practice of law. In-house positions at U.S. companies are well-established TN fits, provided your support letter clearly describes legal work as your core function.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Corporate Counsel roles?
TN is generally faster and more predictable for Corporate Counsel than H-1B. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no multi-month USCIS processing wait. Canadian citizens can secure TN status at the border the same day with the right documents. H-1B requires employer-sponsored registration, a lottery selection, and a filing window that can delay your start date by six months or more.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer needs to provide a signed support letter on company letterhead that states your job title, describes the legal work you'll perform, confirms your start date and employment terms, and attests that you hold the required credentials. The letter isn't filed with USCIS in advance, for Canadians, it's presented directly to CBP at the port of entry alongside your credential documents.
Where can I find Corporate Counsel jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces Corporate Counsel roles where employers are set up to sponsor TN visas, so you're not cold-applying to positions where the hiring team has no familiarity with the TN process. That filters out a significant source of offer-stage friction that Canadian and Mexican legal professionals regularly encounter.
Can I switch Corporate Counsel employers on a TN visa without losing status?
You can change employers, but TN status is employer-specific. You need a new TN authorization tied to the new employer before you start working there. For Canadians, that means another port-of-entry application with a fresh support letter. For Mexican citizens, it typically requires a new consular appointment. Don't assume your current TN status transfers automatically when you accept a new offer.
