Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Hospital Social Worker
Verify your license transfers across state lines
Most hospital systems require state licensure before your start date. Check whether your Canadian provincial or Mexican state credentials qualify for reciprocity or endorsement in the hiring state before accepting an offer.
Target hospitals with existing TN visa history
Acute care hospitals, health systems, and federally qualified health centers frequently sponsor work visas. Search for roles at employers with recent visa filings to identify hospital networks experienced with visa sponsorship and familiar with Social Worker roles that may qualify for TN status.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready employers
Filter by TN visa sponsorship availability on Migrate Mate to surface hospital social worker roles at employers already prepared to support the filing. This cuts the time spent educating HR about USMCA eligibility.
Clarify your degree field before applying
The TN Social Worker category requires a degree specifically in social work, not a related field like psychology or counseling. Confirm your transcript lists your major as social work to avoid a CBP denial at the border.
Get your employer to issue a detailed support letter
Your TN support letter must specify your job title as Social Worker, your USMCA category, your wage, and your employment period. Vague letters citing a general clinical role are a common reason CBP officers request additional documentation.
Plan your Mexican consulate appointment timeline carefully
Mexican citizens cannot use the port-of-entry CBP process and must schedule a U.S. consulate interview. Appointment wait times at U.S. consulates in Mexico vary significantly by location and season, so build at least six to eight weeks into your timeline.

Find Hospital Social Worker JobsHospital Social Worker TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Hospital Social Worker role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. The USMCA explicitly lists Social Worker as a qualifying TN profession. The role must align with the social work job description and your degree must be in social work specifically. Hospital social work roles covering discharge planning, case management, or clinical counseling typically meet this standard, provided your employer's support letter accurately reflects those duties.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for hospital social workers?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, making it far more predictable than H-1B. Social Work is not always adjudicated as a specialty occupation under H-1B, which means RFE risk is higher on the H-1B path. Canadians can get TN status at the port of entry the same day, while H-1B requires advance USCIS processing and lottery selection.
How can I find hospital social worker jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It lets you filter for roles where the employer already supports TN visa sponsorship, so you're not cold-applying to hospital HR departments unfamiliar with USMCA. Most general job boards don't distinguish between TN-ready and H-1B-only employers, which makes targeted filtering on Migrate Mate a meaningful time saver.
Can I switch hospitals while on a TN visa as a social worker?
You can change employers, but your TN status is tied to the specific employer listed in your approval. You'll need a new TN filing before or at the time you start with the new hospital. Canadians can handle this at a port of entry; Mexican citizens need to return to a U.S. consulate or file a change of status from inside the U.S.
Do I need a U.S. state social work license to get TN visa sponsorship?
CBP does not require a U.S. license to grant TN status, but most hospitals will not extend an offer or sponsorship until you've obtained or are actively pursuing state licensure. Some states allow licensed foreign social workers to start the endorsement process after arrival. Confirm the licensing timeline with the specific state board before your start date.
