Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an In House Counsel
Verify your bar admission transfers cleanly
TN attorneys must hold a license to practice law in the country where their degree was earned. If you're licensed in a Canadian province but the role involves U.S. law, confirm the employer's job description reflects your advisory capacity rather than courtroom representation.
Target companies with existing legal departments
In-house counsel roles with TN sponsorship are most common at mid-to-large corporations that already employ legal staff. Focus your search on publicly traded companies, multinationals, and regulated industries like finance, healthcare, and tech, where dedicated legal functions are standard.
Get your LLM credential documentation ready early
Many In House Counsel candidates hold an LLM alongside their primary law degree. Prepare certified translations and equivalency letters for any foreign credentials before outreach, since employers often request these during offer negotiations, not after acceptance.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers actively sponsoring TN roles
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with TN requirements. Migrate Mate filters by visa sponsorship history so you can prioritize companies that have successfully sponsored TN professionals for legal and counsel positions before.
Ask the employer to specify the TN category in the offer letter
USCIS and CBP officers require the offer letter to name the qualifying TN occupation explicitly. For this role, the letter should state 'lawyer' or 'attorney' and describe duties that clearly require legal expertise, not just general business advisory work.
Canadians can file at the border without advance USCIS petitions
Canadian citizens can present their TN application directly at a U.S. port of entry with their offer letter and credentials. Mexican nationals must obtain a TN visa stamp at a U.S. consulate first, so budget extra time before your start date.

Find In House Counsel JobsIn House Counsel TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does In House Counsel qualify as a TN visa occupation?
Yes. The USMCA treaty lists 'lawyer' as an eligible TN occupation, which covers In House Counsel roles at U.S. corporations. Your duties must require legal expertise, and you must hold a law degree and bar license from your home country. General compliance or business advisory roles without a legal practice component may face closer scrutiny at the border or during consular review.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for In House Counsel positions?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, making it far more predictable for legal professionals. H-1B requires an employer petition, a registration fee, and selection in a randomized draw that rejects most applicants. For qualified Canadian and Mexican lawyers, TN is the faster and more reliable path into a U.S. in-house role, assuming your credentials and duties meet the USMCA attorney category requirements.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a signed offer letter that names the TN occupation category, describes your legal duties in detail, states the employment period, and confirms you hold the required credentials. For In House Counsel roles, the letter should make clear the position requires a licensed attorney, not just a business generalist. Some employers also include a brief supporting memo if the role spans multiple practice areas.
Where can I find In House Counsel jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship category, which means sorting through hundreds of listings that won't lead anywhere for TN applicants. Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search, letting you find employers with a documented history of sponsoring TN professionals for legal roles so you can focus your applications where sponsorship is already an established process.
Can I switch In House Counsel employers while on a TN visa?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your current employer. Before you start with a new company, they must obtain a new TN authorization, either at a U.S. port of entry for Canadians or through a new consular appointment for Mexican nationals. You cannot simply transfer the existing TN, and working for the new employer before authorization is granted would put your status at risk.
