Align your credentials to TN categories
New Product Development spans engineering, chemistry, and computer science. Map your degree to the specific TN visa category your job duties require before applying, since a mismatch in credentials is a common denial trigger at the port of entry.
Target manufacturers with active R&D pipelines
Companies with recent visa filings for product engineering and development roles are your strongest prospects. Look for employers experienced with visa sponsorship to surface those already familiar with the visa sponsorship process. Roles classified as industrial and mechanical engineers often align with TN eligibility requirements.
Request a detailed offer letter from your employer
Your offer letter is the primary document CBP or the consulate evaluates. It must describe your duties in terms that match a recognized TN occupation, state your Canadian or Mexican citizenship, and confirm the temporary nature of the position.
Prepare for port-of-entry questioning on project scope
CBP officers frequently ask Canadian applicants about project timelines and deliverables. Bring documentation showing the product development cycle has a defined scope, since open-ended R&D roles can raise concerns about permanent employment intent.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-eligible NPD roles
Search for New Product Development jobs with confirmed TN visa sponsorship using Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa type so you're not guessing which employers will support TN filings for your specific occupation category.
Verify your employer's readiness before accepting an offer
Unlike H-1B visa, TN requires no USCIS petition, but your employer still needs to provide supporting documentation. Confirm early whether their HR team has handled TN filings before, and whether they'll issue the letter in time for your start date.
New Product Development TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does New Product Development qualify as a TN visa occupation?
It depends on your role's specific duties and your degree. If you're performing engineering functions such as product design, prototyping, or manufacturing process development, your role may qualify under the Engineer category. Roles requiring a background in chemistry or computer science may qualify under those respective categories. The title alone doesn't determine eligibility; your actual duties and credentials do.
How does the TN visa compare to the H-1B for New Product Development roles?
For Canadian citizens, the TN visa is substantially faster and more predictable than the H-1B. There's no annual lottery, no USCIS petition, and Canadian applicants can be approved at the port of entry the same day. Mexican citizens still process through a consulate but avoid the H-1B lottery entirely. The tradeoff is that TN requires a qualifying occupation match, so roles with ambiguous duties can be harder to support than H-1B petitions.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that describes your job duties, confirms your Canadian or Mexican citizenship, identifies the specific TN occupation category, and states the temporary nature and duration of employment. For product development roles, it helps to include detail on the product lifecycle, project scope, and how your degree directly applies to the work you'll perform.
Where can I find New Product Development jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface jobs with confirmed TN visa sponsorship, including New Product Development roles across engineering, manufacturing, and consumer goods sectors. Rather than sorting through general job listings and guessing at employer willingness, you can search by visa type and role to find employers already set up to support TN filings.
Can I switch New Product Development employers on a TN visa without losing status?
Yes, but you need a new TN authorization before starting with the new employer. Your current TN status is tied to the sponsoring employer. Canadian citizens can apply at the port of entry with a new offer letter from the incoming company. Mexican citizens need to schedule a new consular appointment. Working for a new employer before receiving the new TN authorization puts you out of status.
