Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
Verify your RN license transfers across borders
Your Canadian or Mexican RN credential must be recognized by the state nursing board where you'll work. Endorsement timelines vary widely by state, and some employers won't extend a TN visa offer until you hold an active U.S. license.
Target federally qualified health centers first
Federally Qualified Health Centers and rural health clinics have consistent need for primary care NPs and are experienced with TN sponsorship. Their familiarity with the process shortens offer-to-filing timelines compared to private practices encountering TN for the first time.
Get your job offer letter written correctly
The offer letter must explicitly state your role as a Registered Nurse under the TN category, your work location, salary basis, and employer details. A vague letter is the leading reason CBP officers delay or deny TN admission for nursing professionals.
Use Migrate Mate to filter roles by employer visa experience
Not every NP posting comes with a sponsoring employer. Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Primary Care Nurse Practitioner roles where employers have recent visa filings and proven experience with work visa sponsorship, cutting out the back-and-forth with HR about visa eligibility.
Understand how Mexican citizens navigate the annual cap
Mexican TN professionals face a 5,500 annual allocation, unlike Canadians who have no cap. If you're a Mexican citizen, factor in consular appointment availability in your job search timeline and confirm your employer is prepared for the longer lead time.
Confirm NCLEX passage is on file before the employer files
USCIS and CBP both require proof of NCLEX passage as part of your TN nursing credential package. If your NCLEX records are held by NCSBN and haven't been formally verified, request a score report early so it doesn't stall your employer's filing.
Primary Care Nurse Practitioner TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, Nurse Practitioners qualify under the TN visa's Registered Nurse category, provided your job offer explicitly describes direct patient care duties and you hold a valid RN license recognized in the state where you'll work. The TN category does not cover purely administrative or supervisory nursing roles, so the offer letter's job description matters.
How does the TN visa compare to the H-1B for Nurse Practitioners?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and can be approved at the Canadian border the same day you apply. H-1B visa requires a lottery, a minimum seven-month wait, and employer-paid USCIS filing fees. For Canadian and Mexican NPs, TN is a faster and more predictable path as long as your role and credentials meet the Registered Nurse classification.
How do I find Primary Care NP employers who will sponsor a TN visa?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It filters Nurse Practitioner job postings by employer experience with visa sponsorship, so you're not cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with work visa processes. This is especially useful for primary care roles, where smaller practice groups may lack experience with international hiring and the support letter requirements that TN sponsorship involves.
Can I work as a Nurse Practitioner on TN while my state license is still pending?
No. CBP requires a currently valid RN license at the time of your TN application. A provisional or pending license is not sufficient. You'll need to complete state board endorsement before your employer files or before you present at the port of entry. Some states take two to four months to process endorsements, so start the license transfer process as early as possible.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for my TN application?
Your employer needs to provide a signed offer letter that specifies your title, duties, work location, and that the role is a Registered Nurse position under USMCA. You'll also need your nursing degree, proof of NCLEX passage, and your state RN license. Canadian citizens bring these documents to a port of entry; Mexican citizens submit them at a U.S. consulate appointment.
