Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Project Consultant
Frame your credentials around USMCA categories
USCIS and CBP evaluate Project Consultant eligibility under the Management Consultant category. Your degree transcript and any professional certifications should map explicitly to consulting work, not generic project management, to avoid a request for clarification at the port of entry.
Build a detailed employer support letter
Your offer letter must describe specific consulting engagements, not just your job title. CBP officers look for defined project scope, client deliverables, and a clear connection between your academic background and the consulting activities you'll perform for the sponsoring employer.
Target employers with established TN hiring workflows
Consulting firms and professional services companies that regularly staff Canadian and Mexican professionals on client projects are structured to issue TN visa-compliant offer letters quickly. Ask HR directly whether they've sponsored TN workers before accepting an offer.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified TN sponsoring employers
Search for Project Consultant roles on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers who actively sponsor TN visas. This saves time you'd otherwise spend screening job listings and contacting companies with no TN hiring history.
Negotiate role scope before your border appointment
For Mexicans applying at a U.S. consulate, the TN allocation is capped, and consular appointments book out weeks in advance. Confirm your employer's offer letter is finalized and includes a specific end date before scheduling, since changes after booking can require starting over.
Track your TN period and renewal window carefully
CBP grants TN status in up to three-year increments. If your consulting contract is extended, your employer needs to provide a new or amended support letter before your status expires. Since USCIS does not send renewal reminders, calendar your expiry date immediately.
Project Consultant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Project Consultant qualify as a TN visa occupation?
Yes, Project Consultant roles qualify under the USMCA's Management Consultant category, provided you hold a bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field such as business, economics, engineering, or a related discipline. Your employer's offer letter must describe consulting activities with defined deliverables, not routine staff work, to satisfy CBP's specialty occupation assessment at the border or consulate.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Project Consultant roles?
For Canadian citizens, TN is the faster and more practical path. There's no annual cap, no lottery, and Canadians can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry without filing paperwork weeks in advance. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship months ahead, involves a random selection lottery, and caps at 85,000 petitions annually. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate rather than a land border, but still avoid the H-1B lottery entirely.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must issue a detailed support letter on company letterhead stating your job title, the consulting activities you'll perform, the projected project scope, your qualifications, the employment start and end date, and confirmation that the position is temporary in nature. Weak or vague letters are a common reason CBP officers ask additional questions at the border, so specificity on deliverables matters significantly.
Where can I find Project Consultant jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking TN-sponsored roles in the U.S. You can filter for Project Consultant positions where employers have an established TN visa hiring process, which removes the guesswork of cold-contacting companies that may have no experience issuing TN-compliant offer letters.
Can I switch Project Consultant employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you need new TN authorization tied to your new employer before you start work. Your current TN status is employer-specific. Canadians can apply at the border with the new employer's offer letter. Mexicans need a new consular appointment. There is no portability provision under TN the way there is under H-1B's 60-day grace period rule, so plan the transition timeline carefully.
