Match your degree to the role
TN visa eligibility for Sales Agent roles hinges on a direct connection between your degree field and the job duties. A marketing or economics degree supporting a B2B account executive role is a stronger case than a general business degree for a retail sales position.
Target employers with cross-border sales operations
Companies with active U.S.-Canada or U.S.-Mexico commercial relationships already understand cross-border work arrangements. Focus your search on industries like industrial distribution, SaaS, and logistics where Canadian and Mexican sales professionals are a known hiring pattern.
Ask about the support letter early
The employer support letter is the core TN document for Sales Agent applications. Raise it before you get an offer so HR knows what's required. A letter that specifically ties your sales duties to your degree field prevents CBP questions at the border.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers actively hiring Sales Agents with TN visa sponsorship. The platform filters roles by visa type, so you're not sorting through postings from companies that haven't considered cross-border hiring at all.
Prepare for commission structure questions at the border
CBP officers assess whether your Sales Agent role is a genuine specialty occupation. If your compensation is heavily commission-based, bring documentation showing the analytical and strategic components of the role, not just revenue targets or territory assignments.
Understand Mexican TN allocation before your consular appointment
Mexico-based applicants are subject to a 5,500 annual TN cap, unlike Canadians who enter at the port of entry with no numerical limit. Schedule your consular appointment at a U.S. embassy in Mexico well in advance, especially in Q3 and Q4 when slots tighten.
Sales Agent TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Sales Agent role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Sales Agent is not a named occupation in the USMCA TN list, so qualification depends on how the role is framed. Positions that require a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, or economics and involve analytical, consultative, or technical sales duties can qualify. Roles focused purely on transactional or retail sales without a degree requirement are unlikely to meet the specialty occupation standard CBP applies.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Sales Agent roles?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start work as soon as CBP approves your application at the port of entry. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship months in advance, a lottery selection, and a wait until October 1 of the fiscal year. For Canadian and Mexican professionals in Sales Agent roles with a qualifying degree, TN is a faster and more predictable path.
What documents does your employer need to provide for your TN application?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that describes the Sales Agent position, explains why the role requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field, confirms the terms of employment, and states you will be performing professional-level work. The letter is not filed with USCIS. Canadians present it directly to CBP at the border. Mexican applicants submit it as part of their consular packet.
Where can Canadian and Mexican professionals find Sales Agent jobs with TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Sales Agent roles where employers are open to TN visa sponsorship, filtering out postings from companies that have no cross-border hiring history. Standard job boards don't filter by visa type, which means most applications go to employers who have never sponsored a TN worker and don't know how to start.
Can you switch Sales Agent employers on an active TN visa?
Yes, but your TN authorization is tied to the specific employer named in your original application. If you change employers, you need a new TN, either at the border for Canadians or through a consular appointment for Mexican citizens. You cannot simply transfer the existing TN. Some professionals time the switch to align with a planned international trip to avoid status gaps.
