Match your degree to the role description
TN visa eligibility for sales roles hinges on the job requiring a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. A marketing, business, or economics degree paired with an analytical or consultative sales title strengthens your application considerably.
Target employers with existing TN infrastructure
Companies with recent visa filings understand work visa sponsorship and won't delay your start date learning the basics. Ask recruiters whether their legal team has handled TN visa cases for sales or business roles specifically.
Get your offer letter framed around specialty occupation
The offer letter is the foundation of your TN case. Ask your employer to describe the role's analytical and consultative functions, the degree requirement, and how the position differs from general commercial sales work.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
Searching broadly wastes time on employers who won't sponsor. Migrate Mate filters Sales Representative roles by TN visa sponsorship history, so you're only applying to companies already set up to hire Canadian and Mexican professionals.
Understand how Mexican citizen processing differs
As a Mexican citizen, you apply at a U.S. consulate rather than at the border. The annual TN allocation for Mexican nationals is limited, so early filing gives you more runway and reduces the risk of cap exhaustion mid-search.
Prepare for CBP scrutiny on sales role classification
CBP officers sometimes question whether a sales position meets the specialty occupation standard. Bring documentation showing the consultative nature of the role, your degree equivalency if applicable, and the employer's support letter that outlines how the position qualifies for TN classification.
Sales Representative TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Sales Representative role actually qualify for a TN visa?
It depends on how the role is defined. A general commission-based sales position typically doesn't qualify. However, a consultative or analytical sales role that requires a bachelor's degree in a related field such as marketing, business, or economics can qualify under the Management Consultant or Engineer categories. The job description and your credential match are what CBP evaluates.
How does TN visa sponsorship for Sales Representative jobs compare to H-1B?
TN visa sponsorship is faster and more predictable than H-1B visa for Canadian citizens. There's no lottery, no annual cap, and Canadian applicants can often be approved at the border the same day. H-1B requires a lottery entry in March with employment starting in October at the earliest. For Mexican citizens, TN processing is longer due to consular requirements, but still avoids the H-1B lottery entirely.
Where can I find Sales Representative jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type, which makes it difficult to identify companies already set up to hire TN professionals. Migrate Mate specifically surfaces Sales Representative roles from employers with recent visa filings, so you're not wasting applications on companies experienced with sponsoring work visas.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN visa application?
Your employer needs to provide a signed offer letter that describes the role's professional and consultative functions, confirms the degree requirement, and states your start date and compensation structure. Canadian citizens can present this letter directly at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican citizens will need to apply at a U.S. consulate with the same documentation. There is no government filing required before you proceed—the offer letter is your primary supporting document for TN status.
Can I switch employers while working on a TN visa in a sales role?
Yes, but you need a new TN authorization tied to the new employer before you begin working for them. TN status is employer-specific. Canadian citizens can process the new TN at the border when starting with a new employer. Mexican citizens need to go through consular processing again. Don't leave your current position until the new TN is approved.
