Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Structural Engineer
Verify your credential meets TN requirements
TN visa approval requires a degree in engineering, not just a related field. A civil or structural engineering degree aligns cleanly. Architecture or construction management degrees have been flagged at ports of entry, so confirm your credential before applying.
Target firms with active federal project portfolios
Structural engineering firms contracted on federal infrastructure, transportation, or public works projects file TN paperwork routinely. These employers have established HR processes for cross-border hires and are less likely to hesitate at sponsorship conversations.
Request a support letter covering your specific duties
Your employer's TN support letter must describe your role in terms that match the USMCA engineer category. Generic letters citing 'engineering work' get challenged. Push for language naming load analysis, structural design, or building code compliance specifically.
Address your P.Eng. or P.E. licensing gap early
Most U.S. firms prefer a licensed Professional Engineer, but TN status doesn't require one. Clarify upfront whether the offer is contingent on U.S. licensure, since state P.E. reciprocity timelines for Canadian engineers typically run three to six months.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers already sponsoring TN roles
Targeting employers experienced with visa sponsorship cuts friction significantly. Migrate Mate filters structural engineering roles by recent visa filings so you're not starting the TN conversation from scratch with every hiring manager.
Plan your Canadian border crossing or consular appointment strategically
Canadian citizens can obtain TN status at a land port of entry the same day with a complete package: job offer letter, credential documents, and USMCA engineer evidence. Mexican nationals need a consular appointment, which adds scheduling lead time to your start date.
Structural Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Structural Engineer role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes. Structural engineering falls under the engineer category in the USMCA TN occupation list. You need a degree in engineering from an accredited institution and a job offer from a U.S. employer whose letter describes duties that align with structural or civil engineering work. A degree in a loosely related field may invite scrutiny at the port of entry.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Structural Engineers?
TN has no annual cap and no lottery, so Canadian nationals can obtain status at a land port of entry the same day they apply with a complete package. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship months in advance, a lottery selection, and USCIS adjudication that can take years with premium processing. For a qualified Structural Engineer with a U.S. job offer in hand, TN is substantially faster to activate.
Where can I find Structural Engineer jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job searches. You can filter Structural Engineer roles by employers with recent visa filings, which means you're applying to firms that already understand work visa sponsorship rather than educating a hiring manager from scratch.
Does my Canadian P.Eng. satisfy the TN engineer credential requirement?
A P.Eng. designation supports your TN application but isn't the primary credential requirement. TN requires a qualifying degree in engineering. Your P.Eng. strengthens the case that your education and experience meet the specialty threshold. However, USCIS and CBP officers evaluate the degree first, so bring official transcripts and your credential evaluation if your degree is from outside Canada.
Can Mexican Structural Engineers apply for TN status at the border like Canadians can?
No. Mexican nationals must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and receive a visa stamp before entering. This consular process adds lead time to your start date. Plan for consular appointment availability in your timeline, particularly in cities with high demand, and confirm all documents are in order before your interview.
