Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Transportation Engineer
Verify your degree meets TN engineering criteria
TN visa classification requires a degree in engineering, not just a related technical field. A civil engineering degree supports a Transportation Engineer role directly; a construction management degree may not. Confirm your credential aligns with the specific SOC code your employer uses.
Target public agencies and infrastructure-focused firms
State DOTs, metropolitan planning organizations, and engineering consulting firms like AECOM or WSP file TN sponsorship regularly for this role. These employers already understand the process, which shortens the negotiation stage compared to employers new to TN.
Request a duty-based offer letter, not a title-based one
CBP officers approve TN petitions based on job duties, not job titles. Ask your employer to describe engineering-level responsibilities explicitly: traffic modeling, highway design, or environmental impact analysis. Generic titles like 'engineer' without duty detail create unnecessary scrutiny at the border.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers with recent visa filings
Searching for Transportation Engineer roles at employers with recent visa filings helps you find companies experienced with sponsorship processes. Migrate Mate surfaces jobs where employers have demonstrated a track record supporting work visas, so you're applying to organizations already equipped to navigate visa sponsorship requirements. For TN applicants, this means employers familiar with the documentation and support letter preparation needed to move candidates through the hiring process smoothly.
Understand how Mexican professionals navigate the annual cap
Mexican citizens are subject to a 5,500-per-year TN allocation under USMCA. Filing earlier in the fiscal year reduces the risk of cap exhaustion. If your employer misses the window, you may need to bridge on a different status or wait for the next fiscal year.
Prepare a professional license equivalency letter if unlicensed
Some U.S. states require a Professional Engineer license for certain transportation roles. If you hold a provincial or Mexican engineering credential but not a U.S. PE, get a written equivalency assessment from your licensing board before your offer is finalized to avoid delays at filing.
Transportation Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Transportation Engineer role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, Transportation Engineer is covered under the USMCA engineering category, which includes civil and related engineering disciplines. Your job offer must describe duties consistent with professional engineering work, such as traffic analysis, infrastructure design, or systems planning. Roles that are primarily technician or inspection work may not qualify under the same category.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Transportation Engineers?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and Canadian applicants can get approved at the border the same day. H-1B visa requires entering a random lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate and a year-long wait before work authorization. For Transportation Engineers with a qualifying degree, TN is a faster, more predictable path if your employer supports it.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a signed support letter on company letterhead confirming your job title, a summary of engineering duties, your start date, and that the position is a professional-level role. For Mexican nationals, the employer also files a petition with USCIS using Form I-129. Canadians present the support letter directly at the port of entry.
Where can I find Transportation Engineer jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for roles that include TN visa sponsorship. Filtering by TN on Migrate Mate shows you Transportation Engineer positions where employers have confirmed they'll support the filing, so you're not starting the sponsorship conversation from scratch during negotiations.
Can I switch Transportation Engineer employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you cannot start working for the new employer before your new TN approval is in place. Canadians can apply at the border with the new employer's support letter. Mexican nationals must file a new I-129 petition with USCIS and wait for approval before the job change takes effect. Plan your transition timeline with your new employer before giving notice.
