Tips for Your Training And Development Job Search
Quantify learning outcomes on your resume
Hiring managers want proof your programs moved the needle. Replace vague phrases like 'delivered training' with specific results: completion rates, post-training assessment scores, or productivity changes you can tie directly to a program you designed or facilitated.
List your authoring tools and LMS platforms
Articulate 360, Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Cornerstone, and Workday Learning appear constantly in job postings. Name every platform you've used in a dedicated skills section so your resume clears applicant tracking systems filtering for those exact tool names.
Target postings by delivery mode and audience
Training and development roles split sharply between facilitators who work live with learners, instructional designers who build asynchronous content, and program managers who own the whole L&D function. Apply only to postings that match the mode you've actually worked in, not all three at once.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists training and development openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Bring a design sample to every interview
Even if a portfolio isn't required, showing a short course module, job aid, or facilitator guide shifts the conversation from hypothetical to demonstrated. Pick one sample that shows your process, from needs analysis through evaluation, not just the finished slide deck.
Negotiate around professional development budgets
Beyond base pay, ask about conference attendance, certification reimbursement for credentials like ATD's CPTD, and access to authoring tool licenses. These matter more in this field than in most because staying current with learning technology is part of doing the job well.
Training And Development Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most training and developments?
The companies hiring the most training and developments right now include The Western and Southern Life Insurance Company, McDonald's, and Brandeis University, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Large healthcare systems, financial services firms, and enterprise technology companies consistently post the highest volume of training and development roles.
How many training and development jobs are remote?
About 14% of training and development openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the field's early adoption of virtual facilitation and digital content delivery. Instructional design and e-learning development roles skew most heavily remote, while onboarding facilitation and hands-on skills training roles are more likely to require an on-site presence.
How do you become a training and development?
Start with a bachelor's degree in education, human resources, or organizational development, then build practical experience by facilitating workshops, onboarding programs, or volunteer training sessions in any context. Earn an authoring-tool certification in Articulate or a similar platform, learn at least one major LMS, and pursue the ATD Certified Professional in Talent Development credential once you have field experience to sit for it.
How do you get hired in training and development with little experience?
Focus on adjacent experience that demonstrates the core skill set: tutoring, coaching, onboarding new hires in a non-L&D role, or designing materials for a volunteer organization all count. Build a portfolio of at least one complete course or job aid using a free Articulate trial, apply to coordinator or specialist titles rather than manager roles, and be explicit in your cover letter about which transferable skills you're bringing.
What does the training and development interview process look like?
Most processes run three to four stages: an initial recruiter screen focused on background and tools experience, a hiring manager interview covering instructional design philosophy and stakeholder management, a portfolio or work-sample review where you walk through a program you built, and a final panel that often includes an L&D peer and a business-unit client whose teams you'd support.
Where can I find and apply to training and development jobs?
You can find and apply to training and development jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, delivery mode, and industry focus, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
