Underwriter Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a underwriter job in Houston?
The most direct path is targeting Houston's commercial insurance carriers, Lloyd's syndicates with Gulf Coast offices, and the energy sector's captive and risk management departments. Roles concentrate in the Energy Corridor, Downtown, and Greenway Plaza. Candidates with energy risk, marine, or commercial property experience stand out in this market, and professional designations like AU or CPCU carry real weight with Houston employers.
Which companies hire underwriters in Houston?
Houston underwriter roles are posted by Travelers, Stellantis, and The Hartford and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Houston's market draws a mix of large national carriers, specialty insurers, and energy-sector risk management operations, all actively recruiting underwriting talent.
Are there remote underwriter jobs in Houston?
Yes, though availability depends on the line of business. About 54% of underwriter openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with desk-based commercial and personal lines roles more flexible than energy or marine positions, which typically require on-site collaboration with risk engineers and brokers in Houston.
How can I get a underwriter job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point in Houston is an underwriting assistant or trainee role at a regional carrier or managing general agent with a Gulf Coast presence. These positions expose you to energy, property, and casualty lines that define Houston's market. Internships at Houston-area insurance agencies or risk management departments at energy companies also open doors, and coursework toward an AU designation accelerates hiring decisions.
Which industries hire the most underwriters in Houston?
Houston underwriter roles concentrate in Insurance, Construction & Real Estate, and Banking & Financial Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Houston's status as a global energy hub and one of the country's largest port cities drives outsized demand for underwriters who can assess upstream, midstream, marine, and commercial property risk.
