Join a team of passionate thinkers, innovators, and dreamers — and help us connect people and build communities to create economic opportunity for all.
About the team and the role:
An eBay subsidiary, TCGplayer is on a quest to be the most trusted trading card game (TCG) platform — connecting and empowering the hobby community. Trading card games are a $25B global market that creates community connection through in-person games (Pokemon; Magic: The Gathering; YuGiOh; etc.). Founded by TCG enthusiasts, we operate a global marketplace, and create tools, technologies and solutions that help small businesses profitably sell TCGs at scale.
As a Principal Product Designer, Design Systems, you will shape the future of TCGplayer's product experience by evolving the shared design system that powers our end-to-end commerce ecosystem—from marketplace experiences and seller tools to fulfillment and robotic inventory digitization systems. You will establish and continuously elevate the visual language, interaction patterns, and experience standards that define our products, helping transform them into cohesive, intuitive, and professional-grade experiences that reflect the quality of an eBay company. Working at the intersection of design, engineering, and technology, you will create the shared foundation that enables teams to deliver exceptional user experiences with greater speed, consistency, and quality while advancing AI-assisted design and development through modern design systems, design tokens, and code-connected workflows.
Our User Experience Design team prides itself on creating a culture that fosters camaraderie, embraces diversity, and exudes passion. We value curiosity, craft, and a desire to directly interact with the real world. You don’t have to be a hobbyist or gamer to love working in TCGplayer’s UX Design organization, but you should be eager to amplify our steadfast commitment to making hobbies and games accessible, fun, and rewarding for everyone. If you’re equal parts “empathy” and “ambition,” this is an opportunity to take risks and stretch yourself, surrounded by teammates who will support you along the way.
What you will accomplish:
Own and evolve TCGplayer's design system across our commerce ecosystem, establishing the visual language, interaction patterns, and reusable components that power consistent, high-quality products.
Partner closely with Design and Engineering to ensure the design system is implemented consistently across both Figma and code, improving quality, maintainability, and development efficiency.
Define and maintain design standards, governance, documentation, and contribution models that enable the system to scale as the organization grows.
Advance our design tooling by developing and maintaining component libraries, design tokens, variables, and workflows that improve designer productivity and implementation fidelity.
Raise the quality bar across the organization by evolving our visual language, accessibility standards, and UX patterns based on a deep understanding of our customers’ unique needs.
Partner with UX Design and Product teams on strategic roadmap initiatives, design sprints, and vision work to define new interaction patterns and experience frameworks that solve emerging customer needs and evolve the design system through practical application in shipped products.
Champion modern design and development workflows, including AI-assisted design and design-to-code capabilities, ensuring our design system is prepared for the future of product development.
What you will bring:
8+ years of experience in Product, UX, Visual, or Experience Design, including significant experience designing and evolving enterprise-scale design systems for complex digital products.
Demonstrated expertise in design systems architecture, including component libraries, design tokens, variables, interaction patterns, documentation, governance, and scalable contribution models.
Exceptional visual and interaction design skills with a portfolio that demonstrates the ability to create elegant, intuitive, and highly polished product experiences while translating them into reusable system assets.
Familiarity with emerging AI-assisted design and design-to-code workflows, and a strong interest in shaping how design systems enable the future of product development.
Experience designing for desktop, responsive web, and native mobile experiences, with the ability to create scalable patterns that work cohesively across platforms.
Deep understanding of how design systems are implemented in code, with experience partnering closely with Engineering to ensure consistency between design and production through shared components, tokens, and front-end technologies.
Ability to define and evolve design languages, interaction models, and UX standards that improve product quality, consistency, accessibility, and efficiency across multiple products and teams.
Experience establishing new interaction patterns and translating innovations from product work into scalable design system capabilities that can be adopted across an organization.
Strong systems thinking and the ability to balance immediate product needs with long-term platform health, maintainability, and scalability.
Experience with modern design tooling including Figma component libraries, variables, design tokens, and prototyping, with a passion for improving how designers and engineers work together.
Outstanding communication and facilitation skills, with a proven track record of building alignment across Design, Product, and Engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in eCommerce, marketplaces, seller tools, SaaS, fintech, or other complex product ecosystems
Demonstrated experience implementing AI-assisted design and development workflows, including integrating design systems with AI-powered prototyping, design generation, and design-to-code pipelines

User Experience Design Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a user experience design in Illinois?
User experience design has no state-issued license in Illinois, so the path centers on education and portfolio. Most Illinois employers expect a bachelor's degree in interaction design, human-computer interaction, graphic design, or psychology, though graduates from UX-focused programs at institutions like DePaul University or the Illinois Institute of Technology also enter the field. Building a portfolio with documented case studies covering research, wireframing, and testing is the critical credentialing step before applying.
How much do user experience designs make in Illinois?
User experience designs in Illinois earn a median of about $85,710 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $58,090 for the lowest 10% to over $157,670 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire user experience designs in Illinois?
Employers hiring user experience designs in Illinois right now include eBay, Rippling, and Relativity, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's deep base of enterprise technology, financial services, and healthcare companies means UX roles frequently appear at both large corporations and mid-size product teams headquartered in and around the Chicago metro.
Which Illinois cities have the most user experience design jobs?
Chicago, Illinois, and Shelbyville hold the most user experience design openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because it is home to the state's largest concentration of technology firms, financial institutions, and digital agencies, while suburban hubs like Naperville attract UX talent through the corporate campuses of major insurance and enterprise software companies based there.
Are there remote user experience design jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. UX design is inherently screen-based work, making it one of the more remote-compatible professional roles. About 100% of user experience design openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly employers have accepted distributed design teams. Research and strategy tasks tend to be the most fully remote, while collaborative design sprints are more commonly handled in a hybrid arrangement.
How can I get hired as a user experience design in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate or junior designer role, which Illinois's technology and agency employers post regularly for candidates who have a portfolio, even one built from student projects or self-directed work. DePaul University's UX program and the Illinois Institute of Technology run project-based curricula that result in portfolio-ready case studies employers recognize. Adjacent roles like visual design, content strategy, or QA testing at a Chicago-area product company are also common stepping stones, as internal transfers into UX are well-established at larger Illinois firms.
Where can I find and apply to user experience design jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to user experience design jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings updated regularly. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and specialty, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
