Veterinarian Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a veterinarian in Maine?
You must obtain a license from the Maine Board of Veterinary Medicine before practicing in the state. The path requires completing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an AVMA-accredited institution and passing the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination. Maine also requires applicants to pass the Multistate Veterinary Practice Examination, which covers state-specific law and ethics. Applications are submitted directly to the Maine Board of Veterinary Medicine for review and approval.
How much do veterinarians make in Maine?
Veterinarians in Maine earn a median of about $130,600 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $81,780 for the lowest 10% to over $194,680 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire veterinarians in Maine?
Maine veterinarian roles are posted by Vetcor, Vetco, and The Jackson Laboratory and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Maine's mix of private companion animal practices, emergency specialty hospitals, and state agriculture and public health agencies means hiring comes from a broad range of employer types across the state.
Which Maine cities have the most veterinarian jobs?
Portland, Camden, and Lewiston are the Maine cities with the most veterinarian openings right now. Portland drives volume as the state's largest metro with the greatest concentration of specialty and emergency practices, while Bangor serves as the hub for northern and eastern Maine, and Augusta draws openings through state government veterinary and public health positions.
Are there remote veterinarian jobs in Maine?
Yes, but they're rare. The clinical side of veterinary work requires hands-on patient care and cannot be done remotely. About 0% of veterinarian openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions are almost entirely in roles like veterinary consulting, telehealth triage, or regulatory and policy work rather than direct patient practice.
How can I get hired as a veterinarian in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for an associate veterinarian role at a general practice clinic in Maine, where new graduates are commonly welcomed with mentorship built into the position. Large companion animal and mixed practices in the Portland and Bangor areas regularly hire new graduates, and Maine state agencies occasionally post entry-level public health veterinarian positions. A Maine license in hand before interviewing gives candidates a clear edge, as does clinical experience from an externship at a Maine-based practice.
Where can I find and apply to veterinarian jobs in Maine?
You can find and apply to veterinarian jobs in Maine on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maine openings across companion animal practices, emergency hospitals, and public sector roles. Search the listings, find roles that fit your experience and specialty, and apply directly.
