Veterinarian Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a veterinarian in New York?
To practice as a veterinarian in New York you must hold a license issued by the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions, which requires a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited institution and passing the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination. Graduates from accredited U.S. or Canadian programs apply directly through the NYSED veterinary licensing portal. International graduates must obtain an Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates certificate before applying for licensure.
How much do veterinarians make in New York?
Veterinarians in New York earn a median of about $131,830 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $89,130 for the lowest 10% to over $251,000 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire veterinarians in New York?
Employers hiring veterinarians in New York right now include Vetcor, BluePearl Pet Hospital, and Banfield Pet Hospital, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's mix of large urban specialty hospitals, academic medical centers, and municipal animal shelters means openings tend to appear across a wider range of employer types than in most other states.
Which New York cities have the most veterinarian jobs?
The cities with the most veterinarian openings in New York are New York, Cheektowaga, and Huntington. New York City dominates the distribution because of its concentration of specialty and emergency hospitals, large shelter systems, and academic institutions, while suburban Long Island and the broader Hudson Valley corridor generate steady demand from private general practice clinics serving dense residential populations.
Are there remote veterinarian jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Veterinary work is fundamentally hands-on, so fully remote positions make up a small fraction of the market. About 0% of veterinarian openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and most of those are in telemedicine consultation, veterinary public health advisory roles, or regulatory and compliance positions that don't require direct patient contact.
How can I get hired as a veterinarian in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for an internship or first-year associate position at a New York general practice or shelter, since both are designed for new graduates without independent caseload experience. The Animal Medical Center and the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital both run structured post-graduate programs for early-career veterinarians. Completing a clinical rotation or externship at a New York facility during your final year, then converting that relationship into a hire, is a common and well-established route. A New York NYSED license in hand before you apply removes the most common barrier employers cite.
Where can I find and apply to veterinarian jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to veterinarian jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state updated regularly. Find roles that match your specialty, experience level, and preferred location, then apply directly to each employer from the listing.
