This team builds and maintains the foundational services and SDKs that power Speechify's product experience across platforms. It's a critical role for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of product and infrastructure, thinks strategically, and is passionate about designing clear, reliable APIs and simple systems that directly enhance the user experience.
- Collaborate with Speechify's Product Teams to scope projects, find ways to reduce scope to get faster feedback from customers, navigate the integration/UX tradeoffs relevant to different product teams, and deliver solutions via our cross-platform SDK
- Optimize existing functionality to ship things like faster loading and more intelligent parsing by designing more efficient abstractions and improving our algorithms
- Ship cloud functions, lightweight backend services, and jobs using Kotlin
An Ideal Candidate Should Have

- Speed. You work quickly to generate ideas and options and know how to decide which things can ship now and what things need time
- Focus. We're a high-growth startup with a busy, remote team. You know how and when to engage or be heads down
- Collaboration. You know how to inspire, play, and negotiate with opinionated designers, marketers, and PMs
Preferred Tech Stack:
- Kotlin Multiplatform (Java experience is OK but role is Kotlin Multiplatform)
- Prior experience with GCP is a plus
What We Offer
- A fast-growing environment where you can help shape the company and product.
- An entrepreneurial-minded team that supports risk, intuition, and hustle.
- A hands-off management approach so you can focus and do your best work.
- An opportunity to make a big impact in a transformative industry.
- Competitive salaries, a friendly and laid-back atmosphere, and a commitment to building a great asynchronous culture.
- Opportunity to work on a life-changing product that millions of people use.
- Build products that directly impact and support people with learning differences like dyslexia, ADD, low vision, concussions, autism, and more.
- Work in one of the fastest growing sectors of tech, the intersection of artificial intelligence and audio.

Which companies sponsor visas for lead software engineers in Alabama?
Huntsville's defense and aerospace sector produces the most consistent sponsorship activity, with companies like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Leidos, and SAIC regularly filing H-1B petitions for senior engineering roles. In Birmingham, financial technology firms and healthcare technology companies also sponsor lead software engineers. Alabama's federal contractor ecosystem tends to have established immigration infrastructure, which supports the sponsorship process for experienced hires.
Which visa types are most common for lead software engineer roles in Alabama?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for lead software engineers in Alabama, as the role meets specialty occupation requirements and typically demands a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related field. Candidates with extraordinary ability may pursue the O-1A. Those transferring within multinational companies may qualify for the L-1A or L-1B. TN visa status is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals under USMCA for qualifying engineering positions.
Which cities in Alabama have the most lead software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Huntsville leads by a significant margin, driven by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, the Redstone Arsenal, and the dense concentration of defense contractors that rely on senior software talent. Birmingham is the second most active market, with growth in financial services technology and healthcare IT. Smaller markets like Tuscaloosa and Auburn generate occasional opportunities tied to university research partnerships and regional technology companies.
How to find lead software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Alabama?
Migrate Mate aggregates visa sponsorship jobs specifically for international candidates, making it straightforward to filter for lead software engineer roles in Alabama without wading through listings that don't offer sponsorship. Because Alabama's market is concentrated in Huntsville's defense corridor and Birmingham's technology sector, filtering by those cities on Migrate Mate will surface the most relevant opportunities. Checking frequently matters, as senior engineering roles with sponsorship move quickly in competitive markets.
Are there state-specific considerations for lead software engineer visa sponsorship in Alabama?
Many of Alabama's top sponsoring employers are federal contractors, which means security clearance eligibility can affect hiring decisions for international candidates. Permanent residency status is often required for clearance, which may limit sponsorship pathways at certain defense firms even when technical qualifications are strong. Candidates targeting non-defense employers in Birmingham or the university research sector generally face fewer clearance-related restrictions. Understanding which roles require clearance before applying can save significant time.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored lead software engineer jobs in Alabama?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
