WHAT YOU'LL DO:
The Design Engineer - Substation will perform substation design assignments including physical layout and protection & control systems while ensuring compliance with safety and construction standards. This role involves designing substation components, selecting materials, preparing design documents, and collaborating with engineers and field personnel to ensure project accuracy and efficiency. This position will report to a Supervising Engineer and be part of a substation design team with other engineers, designers, and drafters supporting substation projects across the QISG platform. There are four bands to this title; an employee moves up in band as they gain experience and demonstrate mastery of new skills.
- Design physical substation components, including yard layouts, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, raceways, and auxiliary AC/DC power systems.
- Develop protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, cable lists and panel layouts.
- Develop design drawings, calculations, and bills of material from engineering documents for planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
- Conduct engineering calculations, including voltage drop, cable pulling, flicker analysis, and grounding analysis.
- Ensure project team applies engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI.
- Perform quality reviews to check for inaccuracies, omissions, or compliance issues, and provide recommendations.
- Work collaboratively with engineers and project teams to develop solutions and modifications as needed.
- Maintain detailed project documentation and support engineering calculations.
- Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the stakeholders.
- Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is highly desirable; this is required for the Design Engineer 4 band.
- Curiosity for and willingness to learn about the major components of a substation is required. Basic knowledge of these components is a plus. Previous design or construction experience is highly desirable.

- Word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail software.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Working in a team environment.
- Communicating effectively with co-workers.
- Able to deal with ambiguity and ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and determine priorities in a complex environment.

Which companies sponsor visas for software design engineers in Alabama?
Huntsville-area defense contractors are the most active sponsors, including Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Leidos, and Dynetics. In Birmingham, companies in healthcare IT and financial technology also sponsor software design engineers. Federal contractors in Alabama frequently file Labor Condition Applications for engineering roles, making them a reliable category to target when searching for sponsored positions.
Which visa types are most common for software design engineer roles in Alabama?
The H-1B is the most common visa for software design engineers in Alabama, as the role meets USCIS specialty occupation requirements given its degree-level technical demands. Some positions at defense contractors may have security clearance requirements that limit eligibility for certain visa holders. Candidates already holding OPT or STEM OPT authorization are often well-positioned, since employers can hire them before committing to H-1B sponsorship.
Which cities in Alabama have the most software design engineer sponsorship jobs?
Huntsville is by far the most active city for software design engineer sponsorship in Alabama, driven by the concentration of aerospace, defense, and government contracting firms around Cummings Research Park and Redstone Arsenal. Birmingham offers opportunities in healthcare technology and financial services. Smaller pockets of activity exist near Auburn and Tuscaloosa, often tied to university research programs and technology startups.
How to find software design engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Alabama?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates looking for visa sponsorship roles, including software design engineer positions in Alabama. You can filter directly by state and role to see employers who have a documented history of sponsoring work visas. This saves significant time compared to manually screening job listings that don't disclose sponsorship status, which is especially useful in a specialized market like Huntsville's defense sector.
Are there state-specific factors that affect software design engineer sponsorship in Alabama?
Yes. A significant share of software design engineer roles in Alabama are tied to defense contractors requiring security clearances, which can complicate or delay sponsorship for non-citizens. Employers must still file an H-1B petition and a certified Labor Condition Application regardless of clearance requirements. UAH and Auburn University produce engineering graduates who often enter the local sponsorship pipeline, so employers in Huntsville and Auburn tend to have more established visa sponsorship processes.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software design engineer jobs in Alabama?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
