Which companies and institutions sponsor visas for research assistants in Arizona?
The University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University are the most consistent sponsors of research assistant visas in the state. Major medical and research organizations including Mayo Clinic, Banner Health, and the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in Phoenix also have established international hiring pipelines. These institutions have dedicated international HR offices experienced in managing H-1B and J-1 sponsorship processes.
Which visa types are most common for research assistant roles in Arizona?
J-1 is the most common visa category for research assistants at Arizona universities, particularly for postdoctoral researchers and visiting scholars, as it is designed for academic exchange programs. H-1B is the standard path for longer-term or staff research positions that qualify as specialty occupations. Some positions at universities also qualify for H-1B cap exemption, meaning they are not subject to the annual lottery.
How to find research assistant visa sponsorship jobs in Arizona?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find research assistant roles in Arizona where employers are actively open to visa sponsorship. You can filter specifically by state and role type to surface relevant positions at Arizona universities, medical centers, and research institutes. Migrate Mate focuses on international job seekers, so the listings are curated with sponsorship eligibility in mind rather than requiring you to screen hundreds of postings manually.
Which cities in Arizona have the most research assistant sponsorship jobs?
Tempe and Phoenix account for the largest share of research assistant sponsorship activity, driven by Arizona State University's main campus and the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, which houses TGen, the University of Arizona College of Medicine, and several research-focused hospitals. Tucson is the second major hub, anchored by the University of Arizona, with strong programs in astronomy, biosciences, and engineering that regularly hire international researchers.
Are there any Arizona-specific factors research assistants should know about visa sponsorship?
Arizona's public research universities are classified as cap-exempt H-1B employers, which means research assistants hired into qualifying positions can receive H-1B sponsorship year-round without entering the annual lottery. The state's growing bioscience corridor, particularly around the Phoenix Biomedical Campus and Tempe's research parks, has increased demand for specialized research staff. Positions tied to federal grants may also have specific citizenship or work authorization requirements that vary by funding agency.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored research assistant jobs in Arizona?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
