Which companies and institutions sponsor visas for research assistants in Oklahoma?
The primary sponsors for research assistant roles in Oklahoma are universities and academic medical centers. The University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University are the most active, particularly for H-1B visa and J-1 visa petitions in STEM and social science research. OU Health, INTEGRIS Health, and the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation also sponsor research staff positions with some regularity, especially in biomedical and clinical research fields.
Which visa types are most common for research assistant roles in Oklahoma?
The J-1 Research Scholar and H-1B are the two most common visa categories for research assistants in Oklahoma. J-1 is frequently used by universities for postdoctoral and funded research positions. H-1B applies when the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Some positions at universities may also support Optional Practical Training for F-1 students already in the U.S.
Which cities in Oklahoma have the most research assistant sponsorship jobs?
Norman and Stillwater account for the largest share of research assistant sponsorship activity, driven by the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University respectively. Oklahoma City is the next most active market, with opportunities at OU Health, the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, and several federal agency offices. Tulsa has a smaller but growing research presence, particularly in energy and engineering research tied to the University of Tulsa.
How to find research assistant visa sponsorship jobs in Oklahoma?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find research assistant roles in Oklahoma where employers are open to visa sponsorship. You can filter specifically for Oklahoma-based research assistant positions and see which institutions have a history of sponsoring international candidates. This saves time compared to manually checking university hiring portals across Norman, Stillwater, and Oklahoma City. Creating a profile on Migrate Mate also helps match you to relevant openings as they are posted.
Are there state-specific considerations for research assistants seeking sponsorship in Oklahoma?
Oklahoma's research job market is heavily tied to its public university system and health sector, so sponsorship availability tends to follow academic hiring cycles, with the most activity in spring and early fall. Federal grant funding significantly shapes how many sponsored positions are available at any given time, particularly at OU and OSU. Research assistants in STEM fields generally have stronger sponsorship prospects than those in social science or humanities roles, where positions are fewer and budgets tighter.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored research assistant jobs in Oklahoma?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
