Which companies and institutions sponsor visas for research assistants in Texas?
Universities are the dominant sponsors, with UT Austin, Texas A&M University, Rice University, Baylor College of Medicine, and UT Southwestern Medical Center regularly filing petitions for research assistant roles. In the private sector, biotech and pharmaceutical companies concentrated in the Texas Medical Center in Houston and life sciences parks around Dallas also sponsor research staff, though at lower volumes than academic and medical institutions.
Which visa types are most common for research assistant roles in Texas?
The H-1B is the most common visa for research assistants holding at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation. J-1 Research Scholar and J-1 Intern designations are also widely used, particularly at Texas universities hosting federally funded research programs. F-1 students with OPT or STEM OPT authorization can work as research assistants without requiring employer sponsorship during that period.
Which cities in Texas have the most research assistant sponsorship jobs?
Houston leads due to the Texas Medical Center, one of the largest medical research complexes in the world, drawing sponsored research staff across oncology, cardiology, and genomics. Austin follows closely, anchored by UT Austin and a growing life sciences sector. College Station is a significant hub specifically because of Texas A&M's extensive federally funded research portfolio. San Antonio also maintains steady demand through UT Health and several defense-adjacent research programs.
How to find research assistant visa sponsorship jobs in Texas?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters research assistant positions in Texas by visa sponsorship availability, saving significant time over general job searches. Because Texas research hiring concentrates at universities and medical centers, filtering by institution type on Migrate Mate helps identify roles where H-1B or J-1 sponsorship is standard practice rather than an exception.
Are there state-specific factors that affect research assistant visa sponsorship in Texas?
Texas has no state income tax, which affects prevailing wage comparisons but does not change federal H-1B wage requirements set by the Department of Labor. Research assistants at Texas public universities are subject to federal grant funding cycles, meaning positions often open in the fall semester aligned with grant award timelines. Candidates in STEM fields benefit from STEM OPT extensions of up to 24 months at institutions like UT Austin and Texas A&M, which are designated STEM programs.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored research assistant jobs in Texas?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
