ABOUT THE TEAM
OpenAI's mission is to ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity. Bringing that mission to life requires products and infrastructure that make advanced AI useful, reliable, and safe for people, developers, companies, and institutions around the world.
Our product engineering teams build and operate the systems that connect OpenAI's research to real-world use. This includes the OpenAI API, ChatGPT, enterprise offerings, and platform services that support secure, compliant, high-quality experiences at scale. We work across engineering, product, design, research, infrastructure, safety, and go-to-market teams to help users and organizations apply AI to meaningful work.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for frontend engineers to craft the user interfaces that make advanced AI accessible, intuitive, and trustworthy. You will partner with design, product, research, and infrastructure teams to build responsive, performant, accessible, and secure web applications.
Your work will help bring OpenAI's models and platform capabilities to life across experiences for users, developers, teams, and organizations. This role is well suited for engineers who combine strong product taste with deep frontend systems judgment.
In this role, you will:
- Build and maintain scalable web applications using TypeScript, React, and modern frontend tooling.
- Create reusable UI components, frontend infrastructure, and product patterns that accelerate high-quality development.
- Optimize client performance, reliability, and accessibility across browsers, devices, and network conditions.
- Work closely with designers to implement intuitive, polished, and user-centered interfaces.
- Contribute to end-to-end product planning, technical decision-making, and product quality across OpenAI's application surfaces.
- Partner with research, safety, and infrastructure teams to turn model capabilities into production-ready product experiences.
YOU MIGHT THRIVE IN THIS ROLE IF YOU:
- Have 7+ years of professional experience, excluding internships, building production web applications at scale.
- Are fluent in TypeScript, JavaScript, React, and modern web tooling.
- Care deeply about design fidelity, accessibility, performance, reliability, and product polish.
- Enjoy iterating quickly while maintaining high standards for user experience and code quality.
- Have strong product judgment and can partner effectively with design, product, research, and infrastructure teams.
- Have interest in AI/ML; direct AI/ML experience is helpful but not required.
- Have proven ability to navigate loosely defined work, manage competing priorities, and make sound technical tradeoffs in a fast-moving environment.
- Bring former founder or early engineer experience building a product from scratch; this is a plus.
TITLE NOTE:
At OpenAI, research and engineering hires share the internal title Member of Technical Staff. We use Staff / Senior Staff externally to signal the depth of experience, ownership, and technical leadership expected for this role.

Which companies sponsor visas for product engineers in California?
Large technology employers with significant California operations, including Apple, Google, Meta, Adobe, Salesforce, and Nvidia, have consistent histories of sponsoring H-1B visas for product engineers. Mid-size and growth-stage companies headquartered in Silicon Valley and Los Angeles also sponsor regularly. Checking DOL Labor Condition Application disclosure data is one way to identify which specific employers have filed for product engineer roles.
Which visa types are most common for product engineer roles in California?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for product engineers in California, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Candidates with an advanced degree may also be considered under the H-1B master's cap. Australians may qualify for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and is available year-round.
Which cities in California have the most product engineer sponsorship jobs?
The San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, and San Francisco itself, accounts for the largest share of product engineer sponsorship jobs in California due to its concentration of major technology employers and funded startups. Los Angeles is a growing secondary market, particularly in consumer technology and entertainment technology. San Diego has a smaller but active base of engineering employers in biotech and hardware.
How to find product engineer visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters product engineer roles in California by visa sponsorship availability, saving significant time compared to manually screening job listings. Searching by role and state on Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have sponsored similar positions before, which is particularly useful for product engineers targeting the Bay Area or Los Angeles technology markets.
Are there any California-specific considerations for product engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
California's prevailing wage requirements for H-1B positions are generally higher than the national average, reflecting the state's cost of living, particularly in the Bay Area. Product engineers should be aware that employers must certify they are paying at least the prevailing wage for the role and location on the Labor Condition Application. California also has strong university pipelines through UC Berkeley, Stanford, and UCLA that feed directly into sponsoring employers.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored product engineer jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
