Which companies sponsor visas for product engineers in Virginia?
Northern Virginia's technology and defense sectors produce some of the highest concentrations of sponsoring employers in the country. Amazon Web Services (headquartered in Arlington), Capital One, Leidos, SAIC, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Elastic consistently file H-1B visa petitions for product engineer roles. Larger government contractors often have dedicated immigration teams, which can make the sponsorship process more structured than at smaller startups.
Which visa types are most common for product engineer roles in Virginia?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for product engineers in Virginia, given that the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Candidates already in the U.S. on OPT or STEM OPT are frequently hired before H-1B sponsorship begins. The L-1B is also used for intracompany transfers at large firms like Amazon and Booz Allen Hamilton.
Which cities in Virginia have the most product engineer sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia, particularly Arlington, Reston, and McLean, accounts for the largest share of product engineer sponsorship activity, largely due to the concentration of cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and federal contracting firms. Richmond has a growing fintech presence led by Capital One. Norfolk and the Hampton Roads area also carry product engineering roles tied to defense technology, though at lower volume than the Northern Virginia corridor.
How to find product engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to search for product engineer roles in Virginia without having to screen out employers who don't sponsor. You can narrow results by location, so listings in Northern Virginia, Richmond, or other metros appear separately. Because sponsorship status is verified at the listing level, you avoid the common frustration of applying to roles where sponsorship turns out not to be on the table.
Are there any Virginia-specific considerations for product engineers seeking sponsorship?
Virginia's proximity to federal agencies means many product engineer roles at contractors require security clearances, which adds a layer of complexity for international candidates since active clearances are generally not transferable and require U.S. citizenship for most classifications. Candidates without clearance eligibility should focus on commercial technology employers in the Northern Virginia corridor. Virginia's strong university pipeline, including Virginia Tech and George Mason, also means local new-graduate talent competes actively for the same sponsored roles.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored product engineer jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
