Search Tax Associate Jobs in CaliforniaTax Associate Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies sponsor visas for tax associates in California?
The Big Four accounting firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG) are the most consistent visa sponsors for tax associates in California, with offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Jose. Mid-size regional firms like Grant Thornton and BDO also sponsor, as do large California-based corporations with in-house tax departments, particularly in the technology and entertainment sectors.
Which visa types are most common for tax associate roles in California?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for tax associates in California, as the role typically requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or taxation, satisfying the specialty occupation requirement. Some employers also use the TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals with qualifying credentials. Candidates with Australian citizenship may explore the E-3 visa as an H-1B visa alternative.
Which cities in California have the most tax associate sponsorship jobs?
San Francisco and San Jose account for the largest share of sponsored tax associate positions in California, driven by the concentration of Big Four offices and tech-sector tax teams in the Bay Area. Los Angeles is a strong second, particularly for entertainment industry tax work. Sacramento and San Diego have smaller but active markets, often tied to government contractors and life sciences companies.
How to find tax associate visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship roles, including tax associate positions in California. You can filter by state and role to see employers who have a documented history of sponsoring work visas. This saves significant time compared to sorting through general postings where sponsorship availability is often unclear or unstated.
Are there state-specific considerations for tax associates seeking sponsorship in California?
California's prevailing wage requirements under H-1B rules are among the highest in the country, particularly in the Bay Area, which can make employers more selective about sponsoring entry-level tax associates. Many sponsored candidates enter through campus recruiting pipelines from universities like UC Berkeley, UCLA, and USC. Holding a CPA license or being on a CPA track can meaningfully strengthen a sponsorship case.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored tax associate jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
