Some positions at universities may also use the O-1 visa for educators with distinguished records.
Which companies and school districts sponsor visas for teaching jobs in California?
Large public school districts including Los Angeles Unified School District, San Francisco Unified School District, and San Diego Unified School District have historically sponsored international teachers, particularly through J-1 exchange programs. Private K-12 schools and universities such as USC, Stanford, and the UC system also sponsor H-1B and J-1 holders for teaching and research-track faculty roles. Charter school networks operating across California may also participate in sponsorship.
Which cities in California have the most teaching visa sponsorship jobs?
Los Angeles has the highest concentration of sponsored teaching positions given the size of LAUSD and the density of private universities in the region. California's high cost of living in major metros also affects how prevailing wage requirements interact with actual take-home pay, which is worth factoring into your decision-making.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored teaching jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
