Search Teaching Jobs in CaliforniaTeaching Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
Which visa types are most common for teaching roles in California?
The J-1 Exchange Visitor visa is the most common pathway for international teachers in California, used through programs like the Teacher Exchange Program administered by the Department of State. The H-1B is also used for university-level and private school teaching positions that qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Some positions at universities may also use the O-1 for educators with distinguished records.
Which companies and school districts sponsor visas for teaching jobs in California?
Large public school districts including Los Angeles Unified School District, San Francisco Unified School District, and San Diego Unified School District have historically sponsored international teachers, particularly through J-1 exchange programs. Private K-12 schools and universities such as USC, Stanford, and the UC system also sponsor H-1B and J-1 holders for teaching and research-track faculty roles. Charter school networks operating across California may also participate in sponsorship.
Which cities in California have the most teaching visa sponsorship jobs?
Los Angeles has the highest concentration of sponsored teaching positions given the size of LAUSD and the density of private universities in the region. San Francisco and the broader Bay Area follow closely, driven by well-funded school districts and major research universities. San Diego is also active, particularly for bilingual and STEM educators. Sacramento and Fresno have growing demand in special education and English language instruction.
How to find teaching visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate is a job board built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship, and you can filter directly by teaching roles in California to see current openings from employers actively willing to sponsor. Focusing your search on school districts, universities, and private schools with established J-1 or H-1B sponsorship histories improves your chances significantly. Migrate Mate surfaces these employers in one place, saving considerable research time.
Are there any California-specific considerations for international teachers seeking visa sponsorship?
California requires all K-12 public school teachers to hold a valid California Teaching Credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, which is a separate requirement from your visa status. International teachers should confirm their foreign credentials can be evaluated for equivalency before applying. California's high cost of living in major metros also affects how prevailing wage requirements interact with actual take-home pay, which is worth factoring into your decision-making.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored teaching jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
