Which cities in Delaware have the most science and research F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Wilmington and Newark hold the highest concentration of science and research OPT sponsorship jobs in Delaware. Wilmington anchors the corporate R&D corridor, hosting chemical and pharmaceutical company headquarters. Newark benefits from proximity to the University of Delaware, which supports biomedical, environmental, and agricultural research hiring. Smaller clusters exist in Dover, primarily through state government research programs and Delaware State University.
What types of science and research roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship in Delaware?
Roles that regularly qualify include research chemist, materials scientist, computational biologist, laboratory analyst, environmental scientist, and postdoctoral researcher. Positions tied to a specific degree field are well-suited for OPT authorization. Are there state-specific considerations for F-1 OPT sponsorship in science and research roles in Delaware?
Delaware's heavy concentration of chemical and pharmaceutical corporations means many research employers are already familiar with OPT and STEM OPT authorization requirements. Employers enrolled in E-Verify, which is required for STEM OPT extensions, are common in this sector. Delaware also lacks a state income tax on some classifications, which can affect compensation structuring, though candidates should consult a tax professional for guidance on their specific situation.
